Meisner Sees Election Platform Being Painted

By Ben Meisner

I usually don’t respond to letters that are written about my opinions, I have always thought it was unfair given my advantage in being able to write every day. Well that was until Opinion250 came on the scene because it enables people to respond to several articles every day in the same manner as I might.

I have watched with interest the efforts of Shawn Petriw, who lost (and lost badly) in the last Civic election as he tries to use our site as his forum for his obvious attempt at office once again come this fall. He has his own paper of some sort or fashion and it behooves me as to why he finds it necessary to use Opinion 250 to better his interests (I do hope his advertisers are reading).

His efforts, to his credit have been tireless, to the point where at one posting, he decided that his election platform was in order and proceeded to link it to his campaign site. I cut the post and informed him that if he wanted to advertise his political prowess, he should, like any other good candidate…. Pay.

By the way for all of you that do not remember Petriw, he ran 16th out of 20 in the last civic election and no he wasn’t close.

But now to the real meat of the issue: Petriw seems to think CN Centre, Coliseum and the ball diamonds are all being subsidized to the same level as the Art Gallery. Come election time I will remind him that in order to comment, make sure you have the facts, and here they are.

This year, the Art Gallery will receive $330,000 dollars in grants from the Regional District. For your information Shawn, the “Regional District” is you and I along with the people from the surrounding area. The Gallery is also seeking a Capital grant for $20,000 dollars from the Regional District for new computers. Other grant funding is being requested for an additional $10,000 dollars.

Now let’s add on the $250,000 dollars given by City hall earlier this week.

The Art Gallery, according to its own calculations, has 363 members; attendance has slipped from 26,195 for the year 2000 to 19,737 in the year 2003. In spite of the attendance, the budget has raised from $681,414.00 dollars in 2000 to $828,366 .00 dollars in 2005. That is an increase of just over 21% in the past five years and further that amounts to a cost of $41.97 cents per visit or a cost of $1,658.00 dollars in grants and write offs this year for each of the 363 members.

The Art Gallery’s budget projection for the Gift Shop is as follows. It is projected to take in $92,989.00 through sales. The Gift Shop’s projected expenses will be $92,984.00 so the net profit will be…$5 bucks. A little slip here or there, and guess who pays?

Suggesting that somehow you can compare the Art Gallery with the CN Center (at around 300,000 visits last year), the Coliseum (at around another 120,000 thousand) and the ball diamonds, which by the way may only have 400 people playing out there of course forgetting to mention that those 500 to 800 people in the stands are also receiving enjoyment, is like suggesting Tom Cruise and Ben Meisner are look alikes.
In the coming months, Mr. Petriw will again have his opportunity to make his case to the Prince George voters. In the meantime Opinion 250 is not, I repeat, not, Shawn Petriw’s election forum to try and vault him into office.

Want the space? You’ve been in the paper business long enough to know Shawn, just sign on the bottom line.

That, is one man's opinion.

Took some good shots there, Ben. I always say, "If you can dish it out, better be prepared to take it also."
I actually do not even remember the guy, so I guess he made absolutely no impression on me the last election. I do know the disappointment I experience when I look at the performances of the ones I did vote for. Seems the names I would like to see on the ballot never appear. Why do you think that is????
Even for just one term at City Hall, a major clean up could be accomplished.. Go for it Ben. Time to "step up to the plate."
I'm sorry that I said, "may as well give some money to the arts". Seems like its a very expensive item for the community to support.I guess its like most of the things that our city does that don't really make much sence.
Petrew has some decent comments, but yah I agree he is IMO out to lunch,he talks a good talk though. The problem with most of the people that run for council is IMO they NEED the money ($20k per year)
Now what I would like to see is Mr Meisner run for mayor, good talker ,tells it like it is and actually know's what he's talking about. So how about it Ben?you will get my vote
ROCK
I hope Mr. Petriw isn't being censored for his views. I think that is not the answer.

That said Mr. Petriw is out to lunch anyways with his views on the downtown and the arts community. IMO he is burning his own bridge by sharing his views.

I say let the man have his say and then he can be exposed for the faults in his opinion as long as he is not campaigning.

Maybe Mr. Petriw should pick out a good blog name that is not tied to his electionering?

I could make some suggestions. LOL
Is your bum sore Shawn? Cause I think you just got spanked.Anyhow IMO it looks good on ya bud. Your mouth runs faster than your brain.

Later mofos.
Thanks for the spotlight, Ben.

Hey, I’m just trying to help you make more money.

You may find it more profitable to encourage opinion and debate rather than stifle it, especially from those seeking office. You may even want to go so far as to have a special section on the site come November.

In the first place, you can facilitate something on opinion250 that can’t be done by the traditional media: have a thorough discussion and debate of the issues, between candidates and with the public. This would be great for your brand.

Secondly, with twenty or more candidates, the public forums are a lousy place to discuss the issues, broken up by 2-minute sound bites and softball questions. No engagement, no debate, nothing anyone can sink their teeth into. Traditional newspapers simply have neither the space nor the resources to print more than 10 to 12 inches. So we tend to elect the most famous candidates. You’re site could play a role in a more sophisticated campaign that gives “better” candidates an advantage over “famous” ones for a change. By actively welcoming content from everyone who may or may not have an agenda or support a particular candidate, Opinion250 could be THE place to go for election new, views and debate.

Here’s the part where you make more money.

More content from more people drives the value of the site upward by increasing both the number of unique visitors and the number of page views. These two things increase the advertising value, and enable you to better retain the advertisers you have, sell more advertising to others, and charge more for it.

Sounds like a win for everyone.

Finally, isn’t it ironic that this site makes money by selling art? (graphic ART and copy WRITING).

In response to the comments that Ben should run for office...Ben if you did - you would get my vote in a heartbeat.

But please don't! You do the community a better service by this forum and for keeping the politicos feet to the flames. You are an unofficial "opposition party" that we unfortunately lack in local and regional governments. You tell it like it is with all the facts and figures to back it.

You take the time to find out, while many others are less inclined (read: lazy???). Could they be more interested in the sound of their own voice(s)??? Should they think about what they are really saying??? Maybe they should be more interested in what the audience is really hearing???
Meisner took round one decisively 10-8 on the scorecards. However Shawn "paperboy" Petrew came out hard in the second and landed a few jabs on ol Meisner's chin. Lets see what happens here in round three...
I disagree with tiki24. To be in the "drivers seat" you must get elected, and I know you would be successful. You can write "opinions" and be recognized by a limited number of citizens for the expertise you display at doing so. It is "not enough." You have the guts and just need that determination to do more, and it will not happen on a computer. Like I said before, Ben," step up to the plate." Leave some "footprints in the sands of time." You are accomplishing about 10% of what you are capable of, and you need this job of sitting in City Hall chambers as much as the job needs you. Not too many candidates running for office have the luxury of knowing they would be a "shoe in." You would be-guaranteed!!!!
Well said "Gypsy".As I fill out my cheque to pay my taxes I would love to see some change at city hall,c'mon Bennie your da man
