“Fairness in Trade”   that was the theme of the message Provincial Minister of Agriculture, Pat Bell wanted to deliver to  a working group session held in Banff.
Bell  was Chairing the  XVI Tri-National Agricultural Accord working group on Trade Remedies which was attended by reps from six different provinces, 20 different States, and several areas of Mexico.
Bell says the group indicated concensus that current remedies for trade disputes  (whether it be agriculture or softwood lumber) clearly don't work.  All  participants agreed they would press their respective national governments to make change.
Bell says he realizes Canadians may be cynical when it comes to believing any real changes can be made or honoured because of the softwood lumber dispute.  That is why he is pressing for  more transparency in the process.  Bell says right now  in the U.S. cases are initially dealt with in a closed door one day hearing.  There is no opportunity for cross examination.
The experts who attended the sessions have been instructed to come back with  clear recommendations for change.  He says the communique to be issued at the end of the conference will be strong.  "I think  that when the National government's see the communique, they will see there is a strong desire to take some action."

Today’s  session comes just weeks after the United States said it would hold off on allowing any older Canadian beef to cross the border.  That was a move Bell  labeled “protectionist”.  (see U.S. Says No to Older Beef, Bell Disappointed)
Bell noted all of the participants feel a certain urgency in  coming up with new ways to deal with trade disputes but the clearest message came from one rep from California who said "We are so busy warring amongst ourselves we aren't seeing that other  countries are coming in and taking away our trade opportunities."

The Americans have proven that they only abide by NAFTA when it is in their favour. We had the chance to rip up this damaging semi-agreement and we missed the boat. Now more than ever we are at the mercy of the Americans, especially when all our politicians bend over in front of the Americans. There was a time when being a Canadian had its own identity in the world. Those days are long gone as we are slowly, (but accelerating), sold and treatied off to the Americans. The sad part is if Canadians woke up from their slumber we could actually reverse this trend. We are even targeted by terrorist because we no longer act as peace keepers but some kind of Northern Regiment of the American Military hence the huge bugdet holes created by Shrubs military build up.I for one do not like this progression into becoming Americans 51st state. Thanks for going along with the tide Pat.
51 st state?
Not as long as I breath!
Bell has had is "bell" rung by Campbell and will do absolutley nothing but take a free holiday at the tax payers expense.
Bell is doing what his portfolio requires: He is calling for fair trade. And so he should. Not that it will ever happen, though.

The whole thing is greater than the provincial Liberals or NDP, it is greater than Campbell or Emerson or Harper.

It is about size and domination of the stronger over the weaker, survival of the fittest by any means.

Fairness?

We will never have "Fair trade" with the US of A, even if we trade fairly. The Mexicans can tell you about their long trade disputes with Uncle Sam and how they always got the dirty end of the stick.

We will never become the 51st state of the union, either. That position is already fully occupied.
All too true, but at least the Mexicans are trying to do something about this as they are trying to get A.M.L.O. elected. He would end the American domination in a hurry. We, however have Shrub who seems more interested in moving into the Whitehouse Kato Kalin stlye. We need to elect someone who will lead the people. Unfortunately, until Canadians realize that they are being sold out and into poverty like the Mexicans finally have, we will see the continued degradation of what it once meant to be a Canadian.
I agree. We are too docile and apathetic for our own good. Shrub is happy that Mini-Shrub has been elected in Canada. One less irritation to deal with. Next thing we know Shrub will hand over the mess in Iraq to us obedient Canadians and others who can be coerced into it, or manipulated into it.

Are we officially at war with Afghanistan, and if the answer is "yes" for what reason? Did Afghan people attack us and shoot Canadians? Leave them alone to live the way they always have, for heaven's sake. They live in a tribal society and haven't got the slightest desire to experiment with the style of democracy that we embrace.

And, traditionally, they treat foreigners with suspicion, especially when they come to invade their country and kill other Afghanis.

There will never be any meaningful peace established in that area of the world by aggressive outside intervention, no matter how well-intended it may be.

I have a question for Mr. Bell.
Do you really have any idea what "FAIRNESS" is or means?
and no, what Mr Cambell said is not the answer I want to hear....
I guess he has no personal opinion!
