After a 40-year lull, bedbugs are making their appearance across BC in record numbers.

One upscale hotel in Vancouver had to shut down 60 rooms and it took days to get rid of the pests. The bugs hide in carpets, clothing, suitcases and such.  They then take up residence in a private home, usually in a mattress, stay hidden at night but make their way onto warm blooded animals usually humans after dark.

The problem with them is that they can live up to one year without feeding and so, Entomologist Judy Myers says the problem is only going to grow.

Should we be smug in Prince George with the bed bug problem?  Not so says Dr. Lorna Medd, Northern Health Chief Medical Officer.  There was a case a few years ago in a hotel in the city where a woman who had rented a room fought the pests all night. Quite apart from that she says, there are bed bugs in this city so be wary, because once you get them, they are extremely hard to get rid of.
