We Are Gas Wimps: One Man's Opinion
By Ben Meisner
We can crow all we want about the price of gas in this region, the truth of the matter is the large gas companies that control the pumps know that we are wimps when it comes to complaining, so they can sock it to us.
The only time in the past few years that gas prices have even resembled other regions of Canada is when a few rag tag people got togther and set up some pickets in front of Petro Can.
It took a few weeks but the prices did eventually come down.
Meantime they were being ridiculed for their efforts and believe me that didn’t go unnoticed with the gas giants.
There were all sorts of reasons put forward as to why we should pay more for gas, none of which had any merit, there even were comparisons made between gas and water. The reality of the matter is that when they finished their stint, the gas companies knew we were a bunch of suckers and so here we are, paying the fourth highest in Canada for the price of gas (less taxes) in Canada.
According to M.J.Ervin, the cost for a litre last week was 85.9 cents. That compares with Whitehorse at 96.5, Yellowknife at 94.7 and how about Ft. St. John at 87.8.
The gas companies now realize that if you work in the oil patch up north you can afford to pay more for your fuel.
Now how about Toronto? They pay 65.5 cents, Ottawa 68.0 cents, even Vancouver pays just 75.2 and the stuff is rolling by our door.
So where does that leaves us? Being had by the gas companies and they have a willing participant so they don’t need to change their ways.
Even in Nova Scotia whare they got tried of being had by the large gas companies and began setting their own prices you will find the cost of their gas is less then ours, what a surprise.
So until we are willing to get off our duffs and do something about it, it will be the same old, same old.
They must just laugh at us in the boardrooms of those energy giants, we really have become their patsies.
I’m Meisner and that is one man’s opinion.

In the USA that tactic would work as the stations are owned by the fas companies.
Not in CAnada. Here the stations are individually owned and they pay for the franchise rights to use the company's name etc. So picket action only really hurt the station owner, who is under orders from headquarters, where ever that may be, as to what price to charge.
I can't somehow see either the federal government or the provincial government getting involved. They get their percentage and that is all that seems to matter.
I did contact the provinvial government about this via email some time back and was given a bunch of government gobblety gook and was told different areas charge different amounts. No Kidding!
If someone can come up with a way that works I would more than glad to help out.
