Its been a few months since  folks concerned about the uses of herbicides  pressed Prince George City Council to find some other means of controlling weeds.

This evening, Council has received a report on how  the City has been moving away from  chemicals.  In fact, chemicals are only used  when weeds cover  more than 10% of a  sports field, or more than 20% of a general park area, or boulevard.

Instead, City staff say they are discouraging weed growth by making sure there is healthy turf, which doesn’t allow for weeds to take hold.

Killex (weeds in turf)99.010.8
Roundup(hard surfaces)29.911.2
Tordon (thistle control)97.721.5

The City staff report also indicates non traditional means are being used, like vinegar, and in the case of fenced City properties, donkeys and goats are used to keep vegetation down.  Councilor Shirley Gratton suggested "steam cleaning" the medians to  get rid of weeds.

Steam cleaning??
Canadian Pacific Railway tried steam cleaning the right of way on Vancouver Island....and it didn't work...weeds were back the next year....Do some homework people before you waste a bunch more money......
Let's give the City staff some credit for moving in the right direction, please.

Steam cleaning the medians is a good idea, even if it has to be done twice a year, in my opinion.

(Unless the Mayor wants to take a goat out for "Lunch on the Median").
