Second Session of John School Today
By 250 News
Today marks the start of the second semester of "John School". It is officially called the Adult Diversion Program and is open only to those who were arrested for allegedly committing an offence under the criminal code (soliciting for the purposes of prostitution) and who have no previous record of sexual or other assaults against women.
The suspects can take the class rather than head to court.
Based on similar models of programs already being successfully delivered in cities like Vancouver, Winnipeg and Edmonton, the participants are less likely to re-offend. Stats show of the 1175 clients who have taken part in this kind of program in other cities, only 5 had re-offended.
The program costs each participant $500 dollars. The all day session exposes the "student" to information about the implications of buying sex including the health and legal risks, the costs to themselves and others, the degradation and abuse of sex trade workers, and the role of pimps and organized crime.
The first session of this program was offered earlier in the summer, following sting operations conducted by Prince George RCMP.
