The man who stood his ground to fight for the rights of the Nechako River, Chief Marvin Charlie, has died.

Chief Charlie died on the weekend at the Cheslatta Nation.

He had succumbed to cancer, a battle he had been waging for the past seven years.

Chief  Marvin Charlie was best known for his stand towards Alcan at the BCUC Hearings over a period of many months in which he stood fast for the right to have not only the graves of his fore fathers relocated but also to receive an apology for the way they had been treated.

A member of the Beaver Clan, Chief Marvin Charlie was a respected Chief throughout the region and his feelings were highly respected by those he dealt with wherever he went.

His clothes were returned to the Nechako River during the weekend following a burning ceremony. A fitting tribute to a man who had fought so hard for the river he loved.

The funeral service will be held at the Grassy Plains hall at 1:00pm, Saturday September 23rd.

That is the day Chief Charlie would have been 62.

I grew up on the shores of Stuart Lake, then migrated down river to Vanderhoof in the 80's. There was a struggle then, I joined the protests and listened to this man. I am not First Nation but I do understand. He was in Prince George for a Rivers Day event a while back.

I now live close to the function of the Nechako and Fraser rivers at Prince George. It is a beutiful, natural area of the city because of his ideas.

This man who I never met has helped to preserve my personal environment most of my life so far and will be missed. Thank you Cheif Charlie. Rest in Peace.
