School District 57 will be sending a letter to the Stephen Harper government asking that it honour the committment made by the previous Liberal government on child care.

Trustee Lois Boone says the Liberal  plan would have given B.C. more than 600 million dollars for child car while the Harper Goverment's plan gives each family just a $100 dollars a month.

Boone expressed  a need for the School District to take a stand on child care, as the Schoool District is in partnership with others in making sure children are "ready" for kindergarten.

Trustee Roxanne Ricard stood firm  as she said child care is not within the School Board's mandate "I recall when we were discussing the changing of the school calendar that parents said changing spring break would mean  alternate arrangements would have to be made for child care.  Several of my colleagues argued that  we are not responsible for babysitting, and  we still are not responsible for the care of children before they come to kindergarten."

Trustee Michelle Marrelli did not support the writing of such a letter.

The  motion to write the letter was passed by a vote of   5 -2.

give give give whats wrong with paying off the dept thats probably the best thing we could give canadians in the long run.
Maybe Lois Boone can say how much her N.D.P government gave for day care during their pitiful reign. Did they even approach the Feds? Typical socialist, Lois. Always slippery with other peoples money. Hey, Lois. I am still paying for those non-existent fast ferries. And so will the little kids now in day care. If they are lucky to be in day care. Free enterprise is too expensive. Tax and spend, ya loony socialists.
The difference is the families will actually get the $100/month. The Liberals were voted out because no one believes their crap anymore. Lois might wish the impossible election promises always come true, but she only has to look at her own NDP record to realize it ain't going to happen just because of a election promise.
Big Government, Big Promises, Big Lies.
Why the hell does the taxpayer have to pay the bill for daycare? Maybe a parent could stay at home and raise their kids properly instead of letting someone else do it. Crap I just had a brain fart, Both parents have to work so they can pay for all the wastefull spending from our past and present incompetent goverments
Child care has always been a challenge for working parents, not only pre-kindergarten but after school care also. It would be nice to see a plan that is fair across the board. The current $100 goes to parents of kids under 6 whereas the Liberal plan would have opened more daycares for everyone to use. The solution I see is daycares put in or very near the work place. It has been proven that when parents can visit their kids on their breaks and don't have to race to or from work to get their kids they are more productive and they take less time off. No one seems to want to ask the work place to make the effort and governments could help with tax breaks for those companies who provide daycare at the work site. Most mothers who use daycare are single and have to work - staying home is not a choice and most fathers are never given the time by employers to be a parent. Governments and employers should take a hard look at how little they really do to support parents and how little value is put on the very important role of raising children.
Did I miss something? Isn't the election over? Wasn't this part of the Liberal's losing platform?
