Architectural rendering of entrance to Gateway Retirement Community planned for 20th and Victoria

Prince George City Council will get a detailed look at the plans for the “Gateway Retirement Community” this evening.

That is the project which is proposed for the corner of 20th and Victoria on the property now known as Ron Brent Park.

The project would see 93 complex care, and 50 assisted living suites funded by the Northern Health Authority, 1 complex care and 31 assisted living “market housing” suites. In all, there would be a 175 suites in phase one, and the potential for 146 more in phase two.

If the rezoning is permitted, the first phase could be built by May of 2008.

Also on the agenda for Prince George Council this evening, an update on the positive changes in the downtown.

Council will get some details about the events planned to mark Homelessness Week, and get some details on possible changes to the fire bylaw which calls for the increase of some fees for things like inspections or file searches.

I doubt if it will ever look as nice as it does in the picture. These projects always seem to be underfunded and paired down a lot.
Is that a chimney for a fireplace on the structure at the left? Bad, bad,bad more polution by a fireplace

Cheers
It is funded by the Northern Health Authority, so I assume they will want the construction standards to be reasonably good. Exterior appearance is more a matter of the designer than money.

One thing of interest to note. We are trying to get rid of wood burning fireplaces. A gas fireplace does not require such a big pretentious structure on the outside. Seeing something like that on a building these days is what I would put under the fake or kitsch category.

The dormers, are just as "fake" of course and are just snow drift catchers, especially since it seems to be happening in the entrance area as well. Then again, who gets snow anymore these days? ;-)

It does look "nice". But it could also be improved and not only look "nice" but be a good design which addresses some local environmental issues.
Hey .... good going kimbo ..... was writing mine as you posted yours ...

;-)

The credentials of posters to this site have expanded (again) to include not only structural engineers (Cameron Street Bridge) but Architects as well.

Who knew that there were so many of both in this humble little burg.
Jethro ....... did it ever occur to you that some of us may be exactly that ....????
BTW Jethro ... the issues relating to Cameron Street Bridge have very little to do with structural engineering ....

Trust me Owly..

Anyone that talks of 'putting a metal structure on the existing pylons' ain't no structural engineer.

I say give the old people a big warm fire place to spend their last days around and lets cut back on industrial pollution. They deserve it.
Chadermando .... I agree completely with you!!! ... There is the scientific, and then there is the emotional. One more fireplace is not going to impact anyone and if someone deserves it tehn, as you say, it ought to be the seniors.
Jethro ... I did not realize you were a structural engineer ... for what unknown reason is one not supposed to put a metal (steel) structure on concrete piers? Please explain.

I understand that there is a report produced by structural engineers who sated that the existing piers have the capacity to provide a new structure to replace the wooden structure. If that were to be done, the new structure sure won't be made out of popsicle sticks.

;-)
It looks like Jasper Railway Station.

The big thing for me would be:have seniors been consulted as to what it would be like living there.

I know of two seniors living in homes in PG who have all their faculties; one is 103 and the other 90 some odd. I will bet Northern Health hasn't contacted them.

Just a guess.
Owl, I can't resist this quip, great minds think alike. I'm not a structural engineer. You will find me sitting by the fireplace in this new structure and I would be wondering why we had all these bright comment about this wonderfull new homwe for me.

And your right what would one more smoke stack mean to our community. Maybe City council but not to the rest of us.

Cheers
"it looks like Jasper Railway Station" ... these days that could very well be because it was designed by an architect from Alberta rather than local.

As far as consulting seniors .... I bet that although some will like living in a place which looks "nice" on the outside, most will be more concerned about the spaces inside and even more concerned about the food and care services they get.
Here's one proposed in Kamloops supported in a similar way by the Interior Health Authority.

Got to "Property Guys" ID40017.
View a perfect site for this seniors residence.
More property, definitely more advantages, and a nicer place to spend their "golden years".
Check it out-see another mistake this city made by not choosing a more desirable site for a seniors residence.
Selling city owned property was more appealing.
The seniors did not have any say, but do they ever?
Stick them anywhere-who are they to object?
