Bill C-24, the Softwood lumber agreement is now in the committee stage. Dick Harris, MP for Cariboo-Prince George has a sear on the committee that will review the legislation.
Harris says he’s happy to add his efforts to the committee discussions " Given the fact that our riding is the largest softwood producer in Canada, it is a key time to contribute to this committee,”said Harris.
Harris says the legislation is exactly what the producers wanted, however, there are some in the industry who would disagree.
Although its thought the agreement will eventually offer free market trade, at least for a time, the 15% export tax on top of low lumber prices has forced several mills to reduce shifts, stop production for a time, or indefinitely.
