A former RCMP officer from Prince George now stationed in Comox has been given a letter of reprimand along with the loss of a half days pay.

Const Derick Smart admitted before a tribunal to surfing the net in the singles websites.

Smart claimed he did not use the computer during regular business hours bur rather during coffee breaks, lunch breaks and after work.

The prosecutor in the matter agreed.

According to the evidence there was no leaked info, vulgarity or anything about porn. The Police Disciplinary board had to consider the matter after Smart had been previously warned.

Smart had a previous record from the City of Prince George.

In that case he was reprimanded and fined four days pay after he purchased a Jeep in Prince George with 210,000 kilometers on it for $1500 dollars and then sold the same Jeep for $2800 dollars after saying it only had 174,000 kilometers on the speedometer.

Smart claimed he has significant health issues , plus PTSD and suffers from clinical depression . He recently was elected to the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame for his involvement in Baseball , and also produced a letter of commendation from Mayor Colin Kinsley.

???? Was the individual who purchased the jeep unable to read an odometer?

There are police officers who get paid to surf the net.
Owl

Where were you when the lights went out, have you never heard about winding the odometer back? and of course the cops surf the net.. but a singles net? what does that have to do with police business "on a coffe break".
Letter of commendation from the mayor? Sure it wasn't a postcard from the mayor saying, "Having fun, wish you were here?" That is a nice thing to say.
Hypocrites all of them!
This is odd, all of you are on the same wave length. Funny stuff, for once.
Maybe he can join the cop who got a DUI while driving home from the cop shop after too many whobbly pops.
I hear she is now up for propmotion....apparently breaking the law by drinking and driving is good for your carrer, as long as you are a cop.
I bet her and this smart guy could have some real nice kids together. : )
"Where were you when the lights went out?"

at the switch...??
sufferes from clinical depression...I wonder if he is still packing a gun? mmm.
RCMP, Mayors, Alderman, Members of Parliament, Lawyers, Judges, Firefighters, Doctors, Nurses, Teachers and on and on and on. They are just people.

Have none of you ever wandered into an area of the internet that you shouldn't have been? At work or at home? Ever lied about anything? Ever done anything you wouldn't want posted in the newspaper? Ever make a mistake that you regret?

I bet that 97% of the time, most of us are quite honest, upstanding and self-righteous about things. But, 3% of the time, we can be less than that.

I would hope that I would be remember for the 97% rather than the 3% of the time that I screwed up. Unfortunately, it's the 3% people want to dwell on and is the most difficult for people to either forgive or forget. Chester
To err is human, to forgive is divine. Unless you are an athiest. Or an agnostic. Or even a Wiccan. The list goes on.

"Some of the comments I have read on this posted story are quite ignorant and un-informed.

Be that as it may, I feel the only reason it became news was the comparison with the situation in West Vancouver. Who knows what extra allegations there may have been, but the fact that they were withdrawn at the tribunal shows there was nothing there to begin with. Seems like a witch hunt on the part of this guy's commander in comox. What troubles me after reading about the evidence in the newspaper, was that this constable was suspended with pay for so long over such a trival matter. When all was said and done, there was an admitted allegation of using a non rcmp computer for innapropriate uses which was worth half a day's wages. Likely more serious is the fact that this guy was treated like crap despite having a history of doing good work. "
