Nukko Lake Water Quality Improving

The Nukko Lake Environmental Weed Society says the quality of water in Nukko Lake is  improving after three years of harvesting weeds from the lake in an attempt to control an outbreak of the Canadian Pond Weed.
With the financial support of area residents, Regional District, B.C. Lotteries and volunteer labour, a harvester was purchased in 2004.
Volunteers regularly harvest the weeds from the lake throughout the summer and early fall.
In cooperation with the Ministry of Environment, water sample testing was done on a regular basis throughout a three year period.  One of those tests checks the clarity of the water with a secchi disk.
In 2003 the disc was visible only in a depth of 2.5 meters or less.  At the most recent test completed this summer, the disc was visible up to a depth of 4.8 meters, or almost double.
This means the water clarity has almost doubled during the time of harvesting.   The water clarity is not the only factor to be considered, but generally it means that most all conditions have improved.
Nukko Lake Environmental Weed Society Chairperson Howard Foot is thrilled with the results.  “The condition of Nukko Lake has a downstream affect on Chief Lake, the Salmon River and ultimately the Fraser River, so it’s important our lake stays healthy for the fish who live in it,  the people who rely on the water for their homes, plus recreation,” says Foot.
