The way has been cleared for the construction of the first phase of the Gateway Retirement home. This is the development slated for what is currently Ron Brent Park at the corner of Victoria and 20th Avenue.

The development will create 94 complex care beds, and 81 assisted living units. It will feature a lodge type look using wood and stone on the exterior. There will be linking pathways, and two new buys stops will be created.

The design panel has also called for reduced speed through the area, pedestrian controlled walk lights at the intersection of 20th and Victoria, curb cuts to accommodate wheelchairs or scooters, and a wider than is currently called for sidewalk.

With the air quality in Prince George as bad as it is, I can't see anyone in their right mind retiring here.
Reduced speeds through the area. Something is wrong here.

Isn't that corner on 20th and Victoria part of our trans-Canada highway through Prince George.

Another reason PG needs a ring road. You shouldn't have an old folks home and the trans-Canada highway sharing the same street corner in the downtown of any city.
Just another example of the sheer stupidity displayed by this Mayor and Council. The sale brought a few bucks into the city coffers, so they were given the green light to spend, spend, spend.
I understand one of their initial plans was to have it located at the Lombardy Trailer park-right by the slough, and really smack bang in the "hood" area. Gave up on that idea when they realized they would be paying for the tow out of every unit to a new location. Must have finally looked at the Provincial Act re mobile homes. I heard via the grapevine they made an offer of one and a half million for the property. That was via the grapevine. Does the realtor who told the story post here? If so-please confirm.
Every stupid decision this Mayor and Council are responsible for should be broadcast far and wide. They get away with their idiotic blunders because the citizens who know better do not seem to care.
You are so right, Chad. Nor should a senior home be built adjacent to a crime ridden section of the city. How did this all come to pass?
This Mayor and council thrive on "bad" decisions.
They have got to go-the sooner the better.
Chadermando............what the heck are you talking about.

The Trans Canada Hiway is about 400 kilometres due south of here! As in Cache Creek.

I think you are referring to Hiway 97, which is a little closer, but still about three kilometres from the area.

If you are going to make a mountain out of a mole hill at least get the facts straight.

The trans Canada divides into a northern and a southern route in Manitoba.

Hwy 16 is an interpovincial highway and is a joint fed prov responsibility.

We should remember that when we are looking for a new by-pass since the trans canada north cuts right through downtown. They paved portions of it last summer. We should be looking at federal money. In fact, perhaps that has been going on quietly without our knowing about it.

Trusted............are you old enough to remember downtown Vancouver in the sixties??? I can and I remember the down and outers who hung around "pigeon park"..........it was a scary place for a youth.

Although that part of society remains, the area itself has been taken back in great part by the City of Vancouver in being aggressive and reconfiguring the zoning etc to make positive things happen. Yes they made some mistakes, but they certainly didn`t stick their heads in the sand and walk away from the problem.

I believe that this council has shown some guts and is attempting to start to solve more than one problem. Seniors housing, bring money into the City and start to "reclaim" one of my neighbourhoods.
Trusted, and as for the Lombardi Trailer park. Have you ever walked down there in the spring or summer. It is a beautiful place. Every spring for the past three years I have helped clean up the needles and condoms along the Hudson Bay walk way. Every year I have met neighbourhood people who have also helped out. I can distinctly remember five large plastic bags of leaves and stuff that the neighbours had collected from the empty lot accross from Lombardi Trailer Park.
They need help in taking that area back.
Port Coquitlam had the same kind of problem down town and some years later the area was rezoned for town houses. Their downtown has been revitalized so that everyone benefits.

Unfortunately everyone means everyone.
It is a very good looking facility. It will match those found in other communities and about time we gat something of this calibre both service and appearance wise.

It would be great if it were closer to downtown. So this is a good compromise. The site was considered for the new RCMP station as well, I believe.

Of course an even better location would be along the river somewhere, as in south of Fort George Park.
Hope those old folks can hold their own strolling around the "hood" for an outing.
Maybe they can pick up some of those condoms and needles to help clean up the area.
There will be little else for them to do.
I suppose when a person reaches an age whereby it is diminishing returns, then they must have all their decisions made for them, and accept whatever is dished out.
Almost makes an ice floe look good!
Youth in Asia might be controversial, but should be an option.
I have re read owl's comment re Youth in Asia a couple times. I am either too thick to make any sense out of it-or owl has lost it.
If it has anything to do with a retirement center and location of same-explain!
