City's Heritage Commission Hopes To Prevent Another KGV

Community Heritage Commission Chair Jo Graber used his year-end report to city council to once again touch on the loss of a historic building in the city with last fall's demolition of the former KGV elementary school.
Graber says KGV, and the failed bid to have it deemed a heritage building, "was sort of a seminal event over the year - another school that went down."
He told councillors, "I don't want to belabour the point, but I think the main thing that came out of that was that I think many people in the community recognize this should not really happen, if at all possible, in the future."
To that end, the commission has been working on a Heritage Registry for Prince George which would include a set of criteria and review process for selecting buildings, trees, and landscapes.
The commission is also seeking a service category enhancement of $13-thousand-500 dollars in this year's budget to begin implementing components of a long-term strategic plan prepared last year.
As with the Athletic Commission's funding request for $75-hundred dollars, the Heritage Commission's "wish-list" item has been deferred to the end of council's budget deliberations.
