UBC goalie Melinda Choy makes 1 of 44 saves in losing cause against U of A

The UBC women’s hockey team dropped a 5-0 decision to the University of Alberta at the Prince George Coliseum but it was a 6-1 result in Regina that grabbed their attention. Regina dropped Saskatchewan to clinch the T-Birds first playoff birth in six Canada West seasons.

Over 700 watched UBC goalie Melinda Choy earn the game’s second star at the Coliseum stopping 44 of 49 U of A shots.

“She’s outstanding she has had some huge games for us over the course of this year,” UBC head coach Dave Newson said. Adding Choy will need to be at her best in a best-of-3 semi-final against U of A.

The final game of the CIS Canada West regular season in women’s ice hockey was scoreless after 20 minutes. The Pandas Mia Mucci and Jennifer Newton solved Choy in the second period. Tarin Podloski scored 2 of the Pandas 3 third period goals. Alberta goalie Dana Vinge needed only 8 saves in posting the shutout.

The Pandas cruised to a 21-3-0 Canada West regular season title. The fourth place T-Birds finished 8-15-1.
