A Prince George man has been given a Certificate of Commendation from the Prince George RCMP for helping out a constable who was under attack last July.
Police say Derrick Norn was on his way home from work at PG Pulp when he spotted Constable Jason being attacked by two young men on highway 97 near the John Hart Bridge. The Constable had arrived on the scene to investigate a complaint of two males jumping in front of traffic. During the struggle, the constable lost his two way radio.
Norn stopped at the scene and yelled out to the Constable “I am here to help you” Norn didn’t waste any time in getting involved “I could see it was two guys taking swings at the Constable. Constable Gillis was fighting back as I ran up, one guy came at me, I grabbed him and was able to restrain him. Then Constable Gillis got control of the one he was struggling with and he came over to me and I helped him handcuff the suspect I was holding on to.”
Norn says he didn’t really think twice about helping out “After its all done, you think, the guy could have had a knife or whatever, but that doesn’t cross your mind when you’re going to help out. I’ve got friends who are police officers and I know they don’t have a very good job sometimes.” Norn says he would do it all again if the situation arose.
Both suspects were convicted and sentenced for assaulting a police officer, Constable Gillis received minor injuries in the assault.
Today, Norn was presented with the Certificate of Commendation at the Prince George RCMP detachment.
