Prince George RCMP are looking for the public's help in locating those responsible for a  diesel spill in the 1100 block of Pacific Street in Prince George.

Police say they were called to a property  owned by Finning Canada  when the owner found a large area of the property contaminated with diesel fuel.  Environment Canada was contacted and  Finning  is now responsible for cleaning up the contaminated soil.

It is thought the dump occurred on the roadway sometime over the winter and has now drained on to Finning's  property.  While Police don't think the incident  was malicious in nature,  Finning is left to  clean up the spill and pay for the cost of removing the contaminated soil.  Those costs could be in the thousands of dollars.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

Could this happen type of incident happen without the driver knowing about it?
It would be sickening to think that a driver would knowingly drive aways from such a mishap. Either way it doesn't seem right that Finning should have to foot the bill.
This is actually more common than you might think... have a little drive around some of the industrial streets on a Sunday morning. You will probably see a number of vehicles being self-serviced. Sometimes they park right over a storm drain so that their old fluids don't show on the pavement, but the old filters, rags and parts boxes are a giveaway.

And yes, I have given numbers etc. to City Hall, MOT and MOE, but nothing seems to change... too many other things to do, I suppose.
I once had a neighbour who owned the land up hill from mine and had a shop where he did all his own oil changes for his logging trucks. The guy was not very smart and he would put all the used oil into barrels with no lids on them. As the snow would melt the oil would over flow and contaminate about a 1/4 acre of my lawn on the one side of the house.

It sucked because it would get all over my dog and stain my lawn for a couple of months until diluted and then make the lawn grow like crazy and I'd have to mow it twice a week. I had fits and tried to get the city to do something, but they said it was provincial, and the province would say it was municipal, and in the end I reached an agreement with my neighbor through no help from the city to have him remove the top couple of feet of his driveway and put it in the ravine across the road so it would stop contaminating my property. The neighbor across the road next to the ravine didn't like that much, but I think he got over it. I sold my property in the end and got out. Apparently in certain parts of the city by-laws do not count.
Oh my God!! I can't believe that people get away with that.
