Today, Benjamin Corey Hart is a free man, having served his complete sentence for the offences involving two young  Prince George girls.

You may recall, two young girls had been playing  in front of their Pineview area home and were picked  up by a man in a van, taken to a gravel pit, and one of the young girls was assaulted.

Benjamin Corey Hart was  subsequently arrested and convicted.

He is being released  today,  and  plans to make his home in the Abbottsford area.  Abbotsford Police have issued an advisory  about Hart because they  believe he "represents a high risk to members of this community."

Now 27, Hart  still has some conditions attached to his release,

  • Not to contact or communicate, directly or indirectly, with children under the age of 14.
  • Not to possess, own or carry and weapons.
  • Not to consume or possess any alcohol or drugs
  • Not to enter any licensed premises or establishment where alcohol is the primary commodity for sale
  • Obey a curfew of 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. daily
  • Not to go within 50 metres of any park, playground, school ground, swimming area, daycare, recreation/community centre, arcade, library, where children under the age of 14 may be present

In it's release, the Abbotsford Police Department  says that after careful consideration, it was "releasing the information in what it believes to be in the best interest for the safety of this community."

"represents a high risk to members of this community." ???
Why is he out then?
He has completed his full sentence, maybe it wasn't long enough if he hasn't reformed.

Precisely right on the mark.

This has been a thorn in my side from day one. Why is the community put at risk, once again, for lack of any better plan ?

Note to self: When you feel that there is a danger present, maybe it is a good idea to remedy the situation so as to reduce or eliminate the level of danger.

Maybe we should come up with a new way of doing things for offenders who have committed physical crimes. Maybe we should treat a fraud artist and a rapist somewhat differently.

Hey, how about we release the fraud artist on probation when his warrant expiry date is reached (as normally is done with all offenders), and the violent offender (in any regard) has to progress through programs and regular assessments successfully before being considered for any type of non-custodial setting.

That way we don't have to tell people that we just dropped an impending sh!t storm in their backyard (Merry Christmas).

We already have Dangerous Offender legislation, to deal with the most risky, in the extreme, but then there is a huge gap for any mechanism to deal with less risky, but still very risky offenders. The rapist gets the same treatment as the guy who writes bad cheques.
I thought alot of child sex offenders get "offed" in prison?
All I can say if he were to come within view of my daughters he'd wish he wasn't born a male.
Amen to that heidi...don't forget crystal hendricks though.
oops HENRICKS. Sorry.
"I thought alot of child sex offenders get "offed" in prison?"

Nope. They are often housed in separate prisons, let alone separate wings of an institution. They would get "offed" in general population, so the system has an obligation to house them in "protective custody". That means they have guards escort them everywhere and ensure their safety and well being. Except in very isolated cases, (like an evacuation or screw-up) general population inmates never have exposure or access to protective custody inmates. They do not get mixed.
