College Heights Plan Finally Approved

By Elaine Macdonald

Monday, August 29, 2005 09:24 AM

After 18 years of being on the wish list, College Heights Secondary School will be expanded.

The project won’t give the school any new classrooms, as enrollment is expected to drop by about 50 students over the next five years, but, the school will get a new music room and new multi purpose rooms.

The full cost of the project is not yet clear, as a feasibility study needs to be done to determine the scope and costs, however, the plan that had been presented for approval carried a bill of just under $5 million dollars.

School District 57 will pay for the project using funds from the sale of schools that have been closed as well as borrowed and local capital funds.

Off topic somewhat -- I am not a perfect grammarian (is that a word?) But does the apostrophe in 'Get's' in the headline stick out like a sore thumb to anyone?

Just because a word has an 's' doesn't mean it automatically GETS an apostrophe.
I think I missed something. Does the press announcement not say the funding is coming from schools sold locally???? Where is the M.O.E. in this? I don`t see any funding from Victoria mentioned. This is all recycle and borrowed locally.
College Heights Secondary School has been on the waiting list for at least 10 years. The school is known as the most overcrowded, underserviced in the district. While Duchess Park jumps the que and gets a brand new school - College Heights still waits for a basic necessity such as a CAFETERIA. There is not even a place for students to sit and eat lunch there, so they roam the halls, or the streets.

And where are these numbers regarding enrolment coming from? This is COMPLETELY innaccurate. How can it be that there will be a loss of 50 students in the next 5 years - when there are at least four substantial subdivisions under construction in College Heights?
And.........;what is it with the province (ie minister bond) taking credit announcing such boondoggles, while not even providing the funding to make it happen???!!!
Mr. PG you have way too much time on your hands! Who cares about the apostrophe? Does it change the story? GET A LIFE!!!
Thank you for the correction notice. Often, when you have written the story, you don't notice the obvious when proof reading. Perhaps some other clarification is in order. The School District is not able to use the funds from the sale of schools until the Province approves it. Despite the growth in the region, that does not mean people moving in to the neighbourhood have children, or children of high school age, hence the enrollment prediction from the School District. We appreciate the zeal with which our readers attack minor spelling or grammatical errors. We only hope those who comment are just as tenacious when it comes to making sure their own comments are accurate.
OOOps .. To the editor, Please note my post was not in any way critical of the story. Thank goodness Opinion 250 is here, so that issues such as these can be revealed, and discussed. I was so instantly incensed by this story, and the lack of progress that I didn't even take note in the story that it has been 18 years.
So please, keep up the great work 250!
The title was changed.

Ah, I just knew someone would say 'who cares'... very predicatable. Thanks, flowerchild.

I hope your next potential employer is as forgiving when they're reading your resume.
"predictable"... darn typo.
Mr. P.G.

It can happen to anyone.
Elaine, if I had an idea people would be so sensitive to my comment, I wouldn't have posted it.

And please don't compare my typo (which I caught) with an outright error (which any spell checker would have caught). As I said, nobody's perfect, but that was just too obvious to pass up.

I'm done with this topic.
OFF TOPIC-but Prince George made the B C T V news again. The dirtiest city in British Columbia,
Sure made it sound like a totally unhealthy place to live.
Boy, could we educate them on just how unhealthy this city is--in many ways!!!!!
Gas is going to go again-or so the U S is predicting. Katrina knocked out more than just homes and buildings. Even off shore oil rigs cut loose. Pretty serious. Won't be able to drive soon-or one will be very cautious about distance.
Why can't there be some GOOD news????
We even missed summer here. Maybe we will have a good winter and natural gas won't be the killer I predict it to be.
Save your pennies, folks-you are going to need them!!!
