The College of New Caledonia and the CNC Students’ Union  are  joining forces to develop a new   Student and Cultural Centre building at CNC’s Prince George campus.

Under an agreement signed today, the Students  will provide  nearly $750 thousand dollars  towards the project.

The Students Union Chair, Valentine Crawford says this is the largest project undertaken by the Students’ Union in two decades ""It is envisioned that this space will not only improve the college environment, but also provide a gathering place for Prince George and the entire region to use and celebrate.”

The concept for the space itself is to provide for student space, a lounge, a First Nations centre, international education, and more. “It will be a true centrepiece for the college,” says CNC interim President John Bowman.

The students will provide $750, 000 dollars towards the project. Am I to presume that, not yet enrolled students of the future who have to sponsor this fund have no say in the matter? But then again, how could they? Not very good. More money spent on accoutrement's than on basic education. Pay thru the nose fer a comfy learning environment. Bah! Humbug! You wanna "a student space, a lounge, a First Nations centre? How about Timmie's just down the road?
Seeing as how these students of the present are gonna foist their dreams and desires with added costs on the yet un-enrolled students, I don't wanna hear any more whining about how expensive education is. Fair?
"Am I to presume that, not yet enrolled students of the future who have to sponsor this fund have no say in the matter?"

??????????

Those who are not yet born have no say in the money the Feds, the province, the city and their parents have borrowed for which they may have to one day be responsible for continuing to pay back ...

However, they do have the advantage of going to another College or University should they see that their student fees are $5 more there than anywhere else .....

;-)
Hi there, we just wanted to clarify that the CNC Students' Union's contribution (which is still technically subject to negotiation) is from an existing fund (Students' Union Building Fund) that has been collected over a couple of decades. In January a campus-wide referendum was held and students voted in favour of using the existing fund to cover the Students' Union's portion of costs. There is no fee increase involved.

Please feel free to visit our website and learn more about the project! www.cncsu.ca
Sorry let's try that URL again! http://www.cncsu.ca
This is a very good deal, especially once it is finalized. The students of CNC are FINALLY getting their building. This has been in planning since the early 80's. I was part of the palnning process in getting a building over 5 years ago. Back them, we (the student union) were always asked what is the building fund fee for and why aren't you building it. Back then, the fee was only $10 per year. It takes awhile to save up for your own building, especially if you do not want to much financing.
In response to Harbinger, with declining enrolement across the province and the expansion of universities and colleges over the past few years, it has become an even greater task to attract students to any given institution. And one way to attract students is offer a "comfy learning environment". Another thing, all major universities and colleges in this province and other provices all have their own student buildings or are trying to build one, including UNBC.
The students of the past helped raise the funds that are available today so that the future students can reap the rewards. This should be a day of celebration. So let's rejoice.
I understand from tonight's report on TV that the total project is $5.2million and the CNC is looking for $ from the Ministry responsible as well as from community "partners".

Sounds like a perfect PPP project from my point of view.

Also sounds like it will be tied together with the registration function, which means more movement within the existing college.

I think a building at the entrance to the college on 22nd with a space which can be rented out to a restaurant chain would be a good investment ... maybe another try at getting HOOters to town to allow students an opportunity for more studies ...

Cheeky cheeky Owl...

This sounds like a great project and something which will be an asset to the entire community...
"A Centrepiece for the College"? With rising tuitions and student protests regarding the same, one would expect to find ways to reduce the cost of education for students.

Is spending money on the following really necessary? Additional Student Space? First Nations Centre? International Education? A Lounge?

And how much is the entire project going to cost? Who is expected to pay for the amount above $750,000? Why do we have money now, when we couldn't justify the expense for the past 20 years or so? Chester
$750,000 cash! Time to raise the tuition fees.
That's a lot of money, but it is only a small part of what the students are being forced to pay that has nothing to do with getting a credential. There are many professional students that stay in school who have thought this up.
So much money is collected that it has attracted money trouble in the executive in the past.
Raise the tuition fee, or give the money to some educational program, we have enough professional students all ready.
cheeky??? I suppose they could study those to if you wish .....
