The Inquest into the death of 22 year old Ian Bush adjourned yesterday in Houston with as many questions remaining as had been asked during the four  days of testimony into the  RCMP shooting death.

The final witness to take the stand was Constable Darren Woroshelo; he was Constable Paul Koester’s mentor at the detachment. He said he though that Koester  was an above average constable. "I do speak with some authority in the matter" said Woroshelo , who was an auxiliary constable in the RCMP in 100 mile for 6 years before joining the force, and had spent two and half years in the service before Koester arrived. He said  "I also was a manager at Sears when I was 19 and had to hire and fire a lot of people , so I've had a lot of experience."

Woroshelo told the jury that he had attended a wedding for Bush’s sister  and Ian was the Master of Ceremonies at the event.

He described the events leading up the shooting by saying he and Koester had been going along and dumping liquor from bottles near the hockey game as the first game of the season was under way, "We wanted to make our presence known".

Asked how many people where charged with open liquor that night, he said "The only one was Ian Bush, who had been handcuffed and taken to the police station in the back of a locked police vehicle after he had given a phony name to Koester on two occasions."

When he arrived back at the detachment following the shooting he said "I told Koester who was crying and shaking, I said to him I was proud that you are still alive, sometimes you have to do what you have to do”. He said Koester was a mess, he said to Woroshelo, "Look what happened in Pincher Creek," referring to where a Police officer who went to jail for shooting a prisoner in an in custody death. "I told him that they were totally different,  I told him he should speak to a lawyer and go from there."

With that, witnesses heard the inquest had been adjourned until July 3rd in Houston.

Counsel for the family Howard Rubin asked if Woroshelo could appear at that time to produce the gun used in the shooting or one similar to see how it operated. The Inquest was told that Woroshelo has been transferred to Mackenzie and so another office will produce a similar police service revolver.

Members of the family left the court room saying they still didn’t have any grasp on what took place. Linda Bush says  ther are many questions that have been left unanswered "The whole thing took place in 39 seconds that included the fight; no one has bothered to ask how Koester was going faint from having no breath for that short period of time? Why where there so many statements written and then in one case destroyed?  What is the explanation for Ian’s shirt to be up in one forensic picture but not in another?  Why a beer bottle was suddenly discovered in the room with Ian’s finger print on it, when Koester said he had completely searched Ian before putting him in the police vehicle? If the crime scene remained untouched and they left my son’s body in that room for now what appears to be a day and half, why are the pictures different?"

Linda  Bush  concluded saying  "That I am tired of the police saying that Ian had run from the police. They didn’t charge him; they certainly knew where he lived and this innuendo is designed to simply destroy my dead son’s name."

Two kids battling it out with one of them having all the physical and tactical tools to control the other and overpower the other.

Both of them likely getting good character references.

Where are the facts of the incident? 29 seconds for an altercation that should not have happened in the first place. Who was there with a stop watch? Are we sure it was not 27 seconds or 34 seconds?

"I also was a manager at Sears when I was 19 and had to hire and fire a lot of people , so I've had a lot of experience"

Hmmmmm .... and what was the training given? And how does a manager of whatever sales/service department relate to evaluating someone in the RCMP? Was Koester practicing good client relations and service?

I wonder if the RCMP had not shown force to curb drinking that night, whether riots would have errupted and people would have been killed? Was the drinking going to be that bad? Perhaps the whole night started off with excessive force and that excessive force culminated in a death. Was this an attitude problem right from the start? Us versus them in a small town with little to do but confront each other? Has anyone set an environmental/attitude scene at the inquest?
In My Opinion Koester committed a crime but I also believe in a small town it goes much deeper and higher and all who have and still are controlling this constables marionette strings should be charged as well. In the end of time for all those involved the true punishment if needed will be given.
iT IS A TRADGEDY ALL AROUND FOR BOTH THE FAMILIES OF IAN BUSH, AND THE OFFICER. TOO MANY UN ANSWERED QUESTIONS, AND OF COURSE THE HEAD OFFICER IS GOING TO STICK WITH HIS OTHER OFFICERS, THE BROTHER HOOD. BUT THE QUESTION IS WHO IS GOING TO POLICE THE POLICE, WE WILL PROBABLY NEVER KNOW THE TRUE STORY, MAYBE THEIR SHOULD BE AN INDEPENDANT BODY, THAT REVIEWS TAPES FROM EACH DETACHMENT, BECAUSE I DONT THINK THE RCMP SHOULD POLICE THEMSELVES

I am curious to know if there is video surveillance of the interview rooms? It would seem to me that a lot of these in custody incidents would be resolved a lot better if there were video monitoring in interview rooms and holding cells. It would seem like a good idea for the police, who battle public opinion in every incident, and for the public to have a better idea as to what really happened. If there was any goading or provoking by the officer involved prior to the shooting, that practice would also stop if they knew they were being taped.
It has been widely reported that there was in fact video taping available, but inexplicably, this was never turned on. I would think that it would be a mater of policy to leave all recording equipment on to provide a measure of accountability and protection for officers who are in the process ofinterviewing anyone. The only reason to turn it off would be to prevent the taping of something that you did not want the world to see. This is an issue that adds to the inconsistancies we have heard in this case.

A story about that night along with other things...grab a kleenex first before you read it.
I guess if Dearren Woroshelo was a manager at Sears and attended a wedding then his word is supposed to be good(?) when in fact he is just as (if not more) guilty as Paul Koester in this whole matter.

Koester admits to turning on the camera (where is the tape)? Woroshelo was working closely with Koester on that night as the senior officer with his primary concern to show the locals that he is in charge when it comes to drinking at hockey games. After the killing of Ian Bush his primary concern turned to his partner in stating 'don't worry about jail were all proud of you.'

IMO the likely greater crime was committed by Dearren Woroshelo for organizing the cover up and instigating the environment that lead up to the crime.

I hope I don't need to travel to Mackenzie any time soon.
I have seen chokers turn their heads to one side while they are choking out the chokee... that could be one explanation as to why a shot ended up to the back of Bush's head.
Re: Chokers turning their head

They have blood spatter evidence. If they had blood splatter on the wall beside the couch instead of down all over the couch, you don't think they would have maybe mentioned that by now? Or rather, since the bullet didn't go right through, there presumably was blood splatter on the wall but not below where the head was situated. They have given no plausible explanation for what happened.
Koester was face down chest facing floor direction he says Ian was on top of him choking him. Grab someone and re-enact this and see if the one being choked is physically able to bend arm in that manner to the back of your head. Don't forget to hold a toy gun in your hand. And keep in mind they said at inquest that Ian was over Koester off to the right which makes Koesters reach even shorter.
I have been following this case with great interest and like everyone else here, have formed opinions based on all the evidence given.

I'm trying to keep an open mind but there are just too many holes in this story ... too many things just don't add up.

I'm hoping for the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth to come out by the time this inquest is over.

Thank you Ben, for this site. :)
The last time I checked, being a sears manager at 19 dosn't make you some sort of personality expert. This copper sounds like a total knob to me. After that comment, I wouldn't believe much that he says.
Yeah some mentor he turned out to be. Comforting Koester before he even knew what happened is far from being professional. These type of cops give a bad name for the hard working officers out there that have integrity amongst a long list of other good qualities. It's not fair to them and its' not fair to us and until those in higher power fix this and get rid of the rotten apples they will have a hard time with crime as there is no respect all around. I believe Koester would've been a better cop if he had somebody he could look up to. Fire his blue butt.
Quick! Grab a rope and hang that cop!!!
Surely the cop is a straight up liar and Ian Bush is a saint. Where's the pope in this?

I am glad I am not a cop. I have no use for punks.
or common sense.
....Or tolerance, patience, self-discipline, education, character, understanding of social interaction, etc.

That's all right, we still need security guards.
Quick, grab a rope and fish those other four statements out of the shredder. They must have been changed due to grammatical or spelling errors.
