Fraser River close to spilling over the banks in South Fort George.
The River Forecast Centre has advised the Fraser River could reach flood stage in Prince George by as early as Sunday morning . As the Centre waits to see if a full scale flood watch should be issued today, the Regional District of Fraser Fort George is circulating some safety advice:
The British Columbia Provincial Emergency Program and the Fraser Fort George Regional District want to ensure the public are aware of a number of safety issues during the spring flood season.
If your weekend plans include camping or other travel off main roads, be aware that with warm sunny weather there is also an increased possibility for high stream flows that could affect travel over or around creeks and streams. A simple, effective safety precaution is to let a friend or relative know where you are going, and when you should be expected back.
If you do notice water flows higher or faster than usual, remember that high stream flows can erode and undercut banks, making them prone to collapse. Stay away from river edges, and when travelling over bridges and riverside trails, carefully consider if it is safe to proceed. Livestock owners should also ensure their animals are moved away from pastures adjacent to rivers.
Heavy snow melt and ground saturation by rain or other means may cause land slippage, mudslides, and dangerous debris in creeks and waterways.
If you notice trees beginning to lean or bend on a hill near your home, or cracks developing in the hillside, you should contact local authorities. If you live near a creek or waterway, a change in the colour of the water might alert you to a problem upstream, and you should also notify local authorities immediately.
Personal safety comes first, and you may want to have emergency supplies for your family on hand in the event you have to leave your home. You should include warm clothing, waterproof footwear, blankets wrapped in plastic, personal identification and prescription drugs. You should also have a battery operated radio, flashlight and toiletry items.
The provincial emergency program and Fraser Fort George Regional District want to encourage everyone to take personal responsibility for preparedness.

The River Forecast Centre is expected to upgrade the High Streamflow Advisory to a Flood Warning later today
