The Fraser River  continues to rise,  and is very close to flood stage.    The Fraser, and Bulkley Rivers are both under flood warnings, and now  two more rivers, this time in the  northwest are under such a warning.

What had been a flood "watch"has now been upgraded to a Flood Warning for both the Skeena and Nass Rivers.

The Skeena River has been rising rapidly over the past 24 hours, following the onset of hot weather yesterday. As of 10AM today, the Skeena River at Usk (near Terrace) was at a discharge of 5900 cubic metres per second, and rising rapidly (at about 6-8 cm/hour, for the past 24 hours. It is currently at a 7-year return period. Flooding is occurring along unprotected sections of the Skeena valley, and flooding may have begun in Terrace and in other communities along the Skeena.

The Skeena will continue to rise today and tomorrow, and may reach an extreme discharge. The Skeena River watershed is forecast to receive potentially significant rainfall, beginning today and lasting through to Wednesday.

The Nass River above Shumal Creek was at a discharge of 4000 cubic metres per second this morning, and rising rapidly (at about 3 cm/hour, for the past 24 hours). It is currently approaching a 5-year return period.  Flooding is likely occurring along unprotected sections of the Nass valley, and will become more extensive over the next 48-72 hours. The Nass will continue to rise today and tomorrow, and possibly longer.

The Nass valley is forecast to receive moderate rainfall over the next 48-72 hrs, as the cold low pressure system penetrates from the Pacific.
