Rising river levels prompted the City of Prince George to issue evacuation orders to residents of Farrell Street late this afternoon.

The Fraser reached official flood levels at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 5. In response, the City issued the evacuation orders to Farrell Street residents in order to protect lives and property as authorized by the local state of emergency declared Monday, June 4.

People subject to the evacuation orders were asked to go to City Hall to register for emergency social services if necessary. The reception centre at City Hall will be open until 10 p.m.

After hours, people are urged to contact 561-7600.

Evacuation alerts were issued to residents of Regents Crescent, Hazelton Street and Pulpmill Road as a precautionary measure. Residents who received the alerts were urged to prepare to leave their residences in the event of an evacuation order.

Also Tuesday afternoon, the City applied to the Provincial Emergency Program to amend the scope of the local state of emergency to include Bedford Place and Taylor Drive east, and to expand the Queensway area to run from 20th Avenue at the north boundary to the Simon Fraser Bridge at the south boundary. Additionally, Wiens Road to Lansdowne Road was also to be included in the local state of emergency amendment.

Murry Krause who lives along the Nechako River on Pulp Mill road says he has a tree om his property which bears the mark where the Nechako  flood level  reached  in 1990. "We are still 44 inches (Over 1 meter) below that level" says Krause, but the City Councilor  knows the worst isn't over yet "We have been here for 16 years and our only fear right now is that with the warm temperatures and now rain falling that the river could rise again. We, along with the Martins (neighbours Bob and Anne Martin) are going to sit down again tomorrow morning to see where we go from here."  The Martins live down stream of Krause.
