The Regional District of Bulkley Nechako has been advised of the imminent danger associated with flood waters to the life and property of persons residing or present in the area of Bulkley Street, 22nd Avenue, and west of 355 Columbia Street in the area of Ebenezer Flats.
An Evacuation Order is now in effect for approximately twenty-six houses within this area.
Residents living within this area were required to leave the affected areas immediately. Residents are reminded to take an emergency supply kit with necessary prescription medications, personal toiletries, and a change of clothing, insurance papers and other important documents with them when leaving their homes. All persons within the area are asked to follow the directions provided by emergency personnel and be extremely cautious of the danger of flood water. Two feet (0.6 meters) of rushing water can carry away most vehicles, including SUVs and pickup trucks. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police and other agencies were expediting this action in the identified areas on behalf of the Regional District of Bulkley Nechako and will not be allowing any vehicles or persons within the area covered by the Evacuation Order. As such, the public is asked to refrain from touring the affected area and to be courteous of the increased traffic flows from this area and in the Town of Smithers. Residents living in low lying areas along the Bulkley River are encouraged to continue flood proofing their homes and are strongly encouraged to prepare to leave their homes if necessary. Residents may contact the Regional District of Bulkley – Nechako at 1-800-320-3339 if they have any questions or concerns.
