The Red Cross is looking for some financial donations to help those in the northwest who were hit hardest by the recent flooding.

“We are supporting the government and other agencies in the development and implementation of a coordinated flood recovery strategy,” says Lise Anne Pierce, provincial director of disaster operations for the Red Cross in B.C.

“Our aim is to provide for those basic needs not already addressed through the assistance of governments, insurance companies and other agencies. The level of support we provide will depend on the magnitude of needs, support available through other sources and the generosity of donors,” she says.

Pierce is waiting for the City of Terrace and the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine to finalize the numbers of just how many families that might require assistance from the Red Cross.

100 clean up kits, donated by  RONA, are being delivered throughout the region.  Stocks of hygiene kits, cots, blankets, and pre-positioned shelter materials are also available and the need for additional supplies is being assessed.

The Red Cross has set aside $25 thousand dollars from its Canadian Disaster Relief Fund to jump start recovery efforts and is appealing to the public to further support this work.

Anyone wanting to make a donation can do so by calling 1-800-418-1111,  or online at www.redcross.ca, or at any Red Cross office in Canada.

Donations should be earmarked “Western Canada Flood and Severe Weather”.
