Quesnel Honours Rescuers

Quesnel’s City Council has made two moves in the wake of a recent rescue of a child from the Quesnel River.
You will recall a young boy was being swept downstream May 23rd after falling off his bike and into the river while on a walk with his mother, and some friends. Downtstream a woman jumped into the river and rescued the boy who was bobbing along, only being kept afloat by the bike helmet he was wearing. ( see previous story)
The woman pulled the child to shore, Quesnel City employees and another woman helped revive the boy until an ambulance arrived. Their actions saved the boy’s life.
The woman who jumped in and pulled the child to shore has been recognized by Quesnel Council for her heroic efforts. This week, Council presented teacher Kim Imrie with a plaque and bouquet of flowers.
Quesnel City staff members Alec Darragh, Doug Chute, Krishan Jassal and Iain Brown were also recognized for their assistance in the rescue. Darragh waded into the river to help Imrie bring the boy to safety. Chute provided basic life support and rode with the youngster to the hospital. Both Brown and Jassal helped pull the boy from the water onto shore.
All five were given a standing ovation by Council and the more than 30 people in attendance.
Then Quesnel took one more step.
It approved spending just over $2500 dollars for safety devices that will be located along the Riverfront Trail. A ring buoy with throw rope in a storage cabinet, will be located at intervals along the Quesnel River and Fraser River.
