On average, nearly 3 people die and 100 people are injured in motor vehicle collisions every Canada Day long weekend...

RCMP "E" Division Traffic Services Constable Dave Babineau says every year, someone makes a poor decision that results in a serious or fatal collision.  He says, "A decision like spending several hours drinking with friends then driving home, refusing to buckle your seatbelt or driving in an aggressive manner (places) everyone at risk."

Babineau says “If people could just change these three behaviors, we could drastically reduce the devastation we see every day. Long weekends are particularly devastating because of the increased volume on the roads.”

The RCMP Traffic Services is reminding motorists planning a trip this Canada Day weekend to follow a few simple guidelines:

  • allow more time than normal to reach their destination
  • slow down
  • be the courteous driver – not the aggressive driver
  • do not drive after you have been drinking alcohol
  • make sure every occupant in your vehicle is buckled in

Constable Babineau says Provincial and Municipal Traffic enforcement officers will be out in full force all weekend. He says officers are committed to making British Columbia roads safe and will continue to focus on the issues that cause harm.
