Another Airport Area Plan Up for Discussion

There is  an open house at the Pineview Community Hall to look at a proposal for some property at the corner of  Johnson and Ellis Roads heading to the Prince George Airport.

The land north of Johnson and on  both sides of Ellis,  has been removed from the Agricultural land reserve, and has been rezoned for light industrial.

Now, there is an application to have the north west and north east corners of that intersection, rezoned to allow for highway commercial development, including  the development of a hotel and some commercial uses.

The meeting to examine the plan  is set to start at 7:30 this evening.

The Prince George Airport Authority has expressed some concerns about the re-zoning saying the light industrial lands  will be the first thing new arrivals will see when they  leave the airport, and the last thing they will see before  getting back on board a flight. It is important to the Airport Authority that this gateway look as attractive as possible.

There are also concerns about traffic as there are issues about access into and out of  a proposed hotel.  The concerns expressed say  with increased traffic expected for  the airport,   access to a hotel would need to be carefully planned.

Darn I would have liked to have been at that meeting!

Boo Hoo to the airport. They have sat on their balls for so long I doubt the airport will ever do anything.

It's funny looking at all the plans the airport has, all the consultant reports, all theyears that have been wasted, all the applications for funding, all the meetings with the city, making an Airport Authority and then someone has the nerve to build something right beside the airport.

That is too funny. Good for them.

It's not out of the woods yet though. The PGRD will likely kill it, considering who sits on that board.

It's your lucky day yamadoopolcat.....the meeting is tonight, tuesday July 10th at 730 pm at the Pineview Hall. You can make a difference .
The airport has a VERY valid point. Right now that part of the landscape is not exactly the most pleasant in the world. However, airports typically have "light industrial" land associated with them that relate directly to the busines of air transportation. Some of that occurs on the airport itself, such as hangars, flying schools, maintenace shops, etc.

These types of activities can be quite aesthetically treated. What the airport authority quite rightly would want to ensure is that wreckers, and other similar types of junk activities be kept from the area.

I alsways find it interesting to fly in from the south ..... seeing all the personal junk heaps people keep in their rural properties.

It definitely give a newcomer to the area an idea of how people in this community live. To some, it will be a shock.

To Owl:
Not all people who live in rural areas collect heaps of 'personal junk' and maybe, just maybe the junk you see is seasonal equipment. Would you have all rural residents construct storage barns so that city folks don't have to be offended by their 'junk'?

Come on metalman, get back on track.

The concern is eyesores for people who are coming into our community, not peoples junk. I suspect my"junk" would expand to the space available. Fortunately I live on a 10,ooo sq ft lot in PG
YamaDooPolCat: What planet are you from? The airport has been improved and expanded hugely. How can you say you "doubt the airport will ever do anything". Why are you so critical? All of the studies (etc.) are necessary, considering the multi-millions of dollars that have been and will be spent on the airport expansion. Surely you would be even more critical if they just charged ahead without proper consultations and study....spending your tax dollars without knowing what they were doing?!?! Our airport is a success/good news story that we should be proud of in PG, and cheers to the airport authority for giving a hoot about the big picture of how important the airport is to our community.
The Airport has been improved and expanded, however for what? The new Customs building is being used for advertising for car rentals, otherwise it sits empty all year. It is used only for one day per week from December to March for direct flights to Mexico, which might be cancelled next year. If you have a big expansion which is not used, is it still an improvement?????

They also expanded the parking lot from 500 to 850 spaces, however at any given moment (long weekends included) you can count 300 or more empty spaces. If you expand your parking spaces, but do not use the expanded space, is it still an improvement?

If you expand your runway for a cost of $33 Million dollars and you do not use the expanded space, is this still an improvement.

Give me a break.
I once went for a swim and had a work out while I waited for the next plane flying stand-by in Tampa Bay. It was really neat, the planes fly right over the outdoor pool. I wonder if the hotel will have a pool....
Well let's see then, some of you think the airport authority are idiots for NOT expanding/improving the airport, and other's think they are idiots FOR expanding/improving the airport, and some of you think they are idiots because you know better and the improvements do not suit your particular opinion. (Perhaps they just threw a dart at the wall and guessed at the number of parking spaces, or opened up the customs area because they had nothing better to do that month or made plans to extend the runway because they personally like the look of pavement over grass) Maybe we should just shut it down and use the Vanderhoof airport. No wonder people get sick of trying to take leadership and volunteering their time to make this a better place to live for the future, when all of the armchair critics so happily shriek with self righteous criticism and sometimes even hatred.
