An application has been filed to have the Backpacker Motel demolished.
The City of Prince George’s Manager of Development Services, Dan Milburn says the permit request is in process, and once some of the conditions have been met, the permit will be issued.
Those conditions include a security deposit that the owners will bring the site to a safe condition and that all of the utilities have signed off indicating all the services are off and secure.
Milburn says it is possible the permit to tear down the Backpacker will be issued within a couple of weeks.
The site has to be rezoned for a proposed housing project for those with mental health and addiction issues. The plans for “Friendship Lodge” call for nearly 30 units with on site support service.
The rezoning application is expected to be presented to Prince George City Council before the end of summer.
B.C. Housing has indicated that regardless of the outcome of that rezoning application, the existing Motel would have to be demolished as the building is not safe.
