The REAPS demonstration garden in Fort George Park

The Recycling & Environmental Action Planning Society is looking to develop more than just ’green thumbs’ with this week’s ’Go Green’ events.

REAPS was established back in 1989 with a mandate of fostering environmental stewardship in the Regional District.  The Society’s main goal is to assist the district in reducing the amount of waste going into the Prince George landfill by 50-percent.

To that end, a number of activities are planned for the coming week...

A composting workshop will be held in the garden at Fort George park at 2pm this afternoon, with another one set to run on Thursday at 10am.

Vermicomposting (worms) workshops are set for 3:15pm this afternoon and 11:15 on Thursday morning.

In addition, there will be recycling craft activities for the kids on-site.

For further information, you can check out the Society’s website at www.reaps.org.

Can anyone tell us how they are doing in their goal to reduce waste in landfills by 50%. If they have been shooting for this goal since 1989 (18 Years) we should have some idea as to how we are doing.

Personally I think the City has totally screwed up when it comes to garbage collection.

Anyone remember when you could take your excess garbage to the transfer station and dump it at no cost. The City would contract to have it hauled away and would have someone on hand to clean up the surrounding area. They then built a new facility with all the bells and whistles, and additional staff, and charged us $2.00 for every time we used it. This wasnt to bad, however not really necessary. They have now increased the cost to $4.00 per visit.

I can gaurantee you that a lot of people who used to use the landfill will now begin to stuff as much excess garbage into their containers as they can, and will not pay the $4.00 to use the transfer station. So I suspect we have now defeated the original purpose of the transfer station.

This once again is an example of the Citys, inability to keep costs, down and provide services, so that they can be utilized by taxpayers. These guys are nothing more than a big **joke**
