Pittman To Operate Overnite
By 250 News
The City of Prince George has to allow an exception to the noise bylaw to allow Pittman Asphalt plant to operate overnight.
Under the City’s existing Noise Bylaw, exceptions are allowed for industrial and construction work when that work is being undertaken by the Ministry of Transportation. The road repairs outlined fall under that category, and the rules also apply to the contractor doing the work, in this case, Pittman Asphalt.
Pittman’s Manager, Jean Brunet, says the plant is committed to several steps to minimize noise complaints from neighbours. To that end, Brunet says the backup beepers from the loaders will be disconnected, milling of pavement will start from the Highway 16/97 intersection and move towards Victoria, then on to Victoria , north to First Avenue. That ensures the milling will be complete before paving starts and that should reduce the number of days the plant will have to operate. The plant will be operational only when absolutely necessary, all noise complaints will be reviewed to see if the noise was coming from Pittman or from some other source and further action will be taken if necessary.
Brunet says the plant has also converted from using a generator for power, to hydro and a new burner is being installed. The two modifications says Brunet should go a long way to reducing the noise.
The work is scheduled to start on September 4th and last 14 days. The plant would need to operate from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. The Ministry of Transportation says the work is being done overnight to reduce disruption to traffic on that busy roadway.
