Prince George City Council is being asked for some answers on when Pittman Asphalt will be made to live up to some conditions set out at the time the plant was given approval to operate.

The North Nechako Residents and Land Owners Association says under Freedom of Information, they have obtained  documents which indicate Pittman was supposed to build a berm, switch to Natural gas, and carry out several other upgrades.

The plan submitted to the City’s Design panel in 2002 promised a berm that would be eleven  metres wide, three metres wide at the top and 4 metre high.  That berm was to be covered with vegetation that would not only stabilize the slope, but  provide a visual and  sound barrier.

The City continues to hold thousands of dollars in securities and in July of last year, asked Pittman when it would be completing the work so the monies could be returned to them.

Nothing unusual there. The city holds hundreds of thousands of dollars that people had to put up to get their developments up and running. Sometimes, or most times, the bond money is for an additional construct that originates in the fluffy imagination of someone that has long since moved out of PG, but stuck PG with their idea of how to make PG look like Las Vegas.
Most times the bond money is for something that no one can see working or is unnecessary and is just a waste of money, but is needed to satisfy a bylaw that should have been amended long ago.
Funny how it takes more work to amend a bylaw than it does to add more bylaws to the books.
A promise made in 2002? Still not kept?? Pittman Asphalt is supported financially by this city and is working for the residents of Prince George when they pave Victoria Street. BUT, they should in turn, care for those same citizens. The subdivisions that will be affected by this all night noise and pollution from Pittman Asphalt were there before Pittman Asphalt. Pittman Asphalt should build the large berm that they promised to build to protect the residents from any possible noise and they should be burning natural gas, not waste oil, because they promised that they would do so in 2002, prior to operating in the city airshed.
Is it not now 2007? Why does it take citizen pressure to make these things happen. The companies should do it themselves. Be good corporate citizens.Build your Berm and do whatever else it takes to give back to your community. You give all commercial operations a bad name and make it difficult for any of us to operate!
