Prince George City Council meets this evening and will receive a capital grant request from the Outdoor Ice Oval Society.

The Society is asking for $50 thousand dollars for fencing and electrical installation at the ice oval that is under construction west of the Kin Centres.

Council will also be asked to provide $25 thousand dollars for the Mayor’s Task Force on Air Quality.  The  request says the money a necessity to complete the Task Force work.

There is another request before the City to support the removal of a large parcel of land from the Agricultural land Reserve. This parcel is 128 hectares and is east of the BCR site.

The Royal Bank Cup Committee will make an official presentation of the positive results from the tournament.  That report will outline the positive impact on tourism. The West of the Rockies Pro Rodeo Finals Committee will also make a presentation  to  spark interest in the event.

I used to support the Oval society but after that stunt with the gravel and still no answers about how all that happened with out proper bidding or purchasing procedures being followed I now wish all providing of tax payer's dollars be stopped until such time as the questions are answered. They should have gotten over $100,000 for the gravel. Use that for the fence and electrical.
I wonder if Development Services will get behind this ALR application and recommend support?
Or no support and hope the businesses just leave town and stop bothering them.
Of course the Oval Society is going to ask the taxpayers to pay for their activities, join the ranks of all the rest of them...
I wish someone would pay for my leisure activities...
If you can't pay for it, you don't need it...
Now before everyone goes off on me,
I have no problem with the city making them a low interest loan, but an outright gift, sorry.
Sheesh!!!

Where were you people when council loaned n/c , non repayable a $100,000 to P.G.A.R.A to black top the track.

The Ice Oval Society is volunteer driven.......

There has always been this need in our City, going back to the turn of the last Century......but on Rivers that no longer freeze.

I do not skate, I do not walk, I do not bike and I do not ski but I support this endeavour because it is being done for the betterment of the Community.

I'm in agreement with Runner46.

This goes a long ways in improving the community in terms of preventative medicine, giving kids something to do, etc.

I know the main person behind this drive and she works tirelessly behind the scenes all without asking for a single dime back.
Surely all of the gravel that they were selling should be their handout.
Oh I have no trouble with City Council supporting the various public groups as long as the rules are followed. There was over $100,000 worth of city assets disposed of without proper tendering process, that upsets me greatly. How come my company didn't get a chance to bid on that gravel and use it !
Once again though for me it proves here in PG it is who you know for what you can get away with. Someone in City Hall should be fired over this. They did not have council approval to do this and yet it was still done.
The end cost of the ice oval as I understand it will be in the area of $13 Million. This will be over a number of years. They are looking for $7.5 Million to get started. We will hear more after to-night, however it seems to me that this might be a bit much for a small number of skaters. You might get a larger number during the summer for inline skating, however it still seems to be pretty expensive.

Hey Palopu

When I moved here from the Coast in 1982 the logic you present prevailed when discussing:

1. A newer Civic Centre
2. CN Centre
3. A new Art Gallary
4. Masich Place Stadium
5. Second indoor swimming pool
6. Doing something with the gravel pit that is now New Rotary Fields
7. And of course U.N.B.C. was unthinkable.

Runner46.

(1) New Civic Centre totally under utilized

(2) CN Centre space for 6000 Hockey fans, average for the past 3 years 3000. Under utilized. Costs the City $600,000.00 per year to operate.

(3) New Art Gallery. Totally and I mean totally under utilized.

(4) Masich Place Stadium. Gets some good use from local walkers, and some soccer and football. I expect that they will lose some business to the New Sports Plex, which I predict will be totally under utilized.

(5) Second indoor swimming pool. Very well utilized, however the first one may not be.

(6) The New Rotary Fields were built so that the Old Rotary Fields could be sold to the Prince George Golf Course for a Driving Range. The building of a new driving range allowed the City to close down the driving range at the Par 3 and it was turned into a car lot. This was all part of the plan to get rid of the recreation place facilities, and turn it into commercial.

(7) UNBC under utilized in a big way, seems that they cannot get anymore students than 3600, to 3700 Full Time Equivelant. Enrolments static for the past four years.

(8) New horseshoe pits across from Masich Place. Totally under utilized. Even though this is a brand new facility it already has grass growing in the pits and most of them have never been used.

All Im saying is that maybe we should be building facilities that are utilized rather than just build them.

In any event I dont doubt that they will build the Ice Oval, and it will also be totally under utilized. I think the question has alread been asked. How many speed skaters do we have?.
