Homelessness snapshot;
Those involved in providing services for the homeless in Prince George, say that on October 10th, in Prince George, there were, 122 people seeking shelter.
Of that number, 60 were men, 47 were women, 15 were children and youth. Also on that day, 800 meals were served.
That, says Maryanne Sorensen a director of AWAC in Prince George, indicates there are a great many who may have shelter, but who cannot afford to pay for rent, and food, or rent and heat, or rent and clothing for their children.
While poverty is the number one cause of homelessness, the cost of shelter is increasing. “Most of the clients are making abut $1100 dollars a month, and with the cost of housing climbing it is creeping out of reach.” Sorensen says the cost of renting a home has climbed from 1027 a month to 1230, while a duplex rent has jumped 160 dollars a month, basement suites are up about 150 dollars.
Sorenson says programs that promote “housing first” have shown to be successful in assisting people in breaking the homelessness cycle. Sorenson says there are things that can be done:
- increase our understanding of homelessness and its causes
- support local projects which address the issues of homelessness
- be respectful and courteous to homeless people
Councilor Deborah Munoz made a motion to have Administration look at ways which would have the City partner with other levels of government to develop affordable housing in the community. That motion was supported unanimously.
Council also approved declaring October 15th to 21st as Homelessness Action week.Previous Story - Next Story
