No Fall Federal Election

Don't expect to be heading to the polls  before Christmas to elect  a  Federal Government.

Liberal Leader Stephane Dion says  his team will  present some amendments to yesterday's Speech  from the Throne, and if the amendments are rejected,  well, they will abstain from voting on the  Speech.

That means the speech would pass as the NDP and Bloc Quebecois don’t have enough members to topple the government.

The bottom line  is,   if the Liberals abstain,  there aren’t enough votes  in the House of Commons to force an election.

So there we go...Dion has once again shown how much of an ineffectual leader he really is.
No election.
Harper is proving to be much tougher and a smarter poltician than he has been given credit for.
Like many,I still don't trust him, but compared to Dion,he is about the only viable alternative!
Now I predict he will really start to show his arrogance.
He just won another go around with a very weak opposition, and for a minority government, that's a big one!
Dion didn't take the bait-does that make him weak? I think you are right about Harper, though- he will now show his arrogant side (and the reason the Conservatives are still not ahead in the polls). Dion will bide his time. Harper and the Conservatives will shoot themselves in the foot(again)and the Liberals will be good enough to elect in about a year.
This is about the only thing Dion has done right yet. Not that he had much choice. I can't wait till Harper is elected to a majority government.
He definitely is doing a woos out.
I suppose it is easier than making a decision... oh, he did make one, he decided not to make a decision.
Sad state of affairs.
Your right about one thing herbster,
I really do think Harper and his band of merry men will shoot themslves in their collective foot!
Harpers arrogance will be his downfall. His lack of people skills will only make him more enemies as time goes on and he doesn't seem to be learning anything about that so far.
I would much rather have had an election to settle the issue once and for all, instead of all the childish crap they wasting time on in Ottawa right now!
That's not what we pay them for.
The real story here is the Omnibus judicial bill. That will be a confidence motion and a real opportunity to see what our country is made of. Wrap up many bills that have been tied up in the commitee/senate and all the parliamentery games they play, into one key moment in time, on a confidence issue. This will be fun for political junkies.

Where does all this Harper arrogance sentiment come from? Arrogance oozes out of Dion and Layton and most politicians. It goes with the territory. Why not focus on the content of the speech. Debate that logically if you people can.
Prime Minister Harper is the Prime Minister. He was elected to govern our country. He has an agenda. He is not afraid to let us know what it is. In fact, his agenda, their agenda was their platform for getting elected.

So, accept it and let's get on with running the country. He's not arrogant, he's a leader and has no problem making a decision. That is why he has accomplished so much in such a short time. Much of what he is doing and has done is what I had hoped for this past 20 years. Press on PM Harper and make the best of your term in office. The Liberals, NDP and Bloc may have their chance another day, but not now. Chester
I wonder if Dion had to wait for his decision to come down from France. I still don't think a duel citizen would be the right choice for a Primce Minister much less an MP.

If the liebrals were smart they'd remove him on those grounds alone (no disclosure prior to leadership vote) and then we'd have an Ignatiff and Harper showdown at the OK corral.... I like Ignatiff as a potential Prime Minister much more then any of the other options to Harper.

IMO Harper doesn't want a second term and wants to get his agenda all done in one government.
IMO Harper's agenda is not the Triple EEE Senate, nor electoral reform that he rose to power advocating. For him those were convenient slogans to win the publics trust and gain power and nothing more....
"Prime Minister Harper is the Prime Minister. He was elected to govern our country."

A slight error there. We do not elect the Prime Minister. We elect members of parliament and those who are affiliated with the majority party form government. The leader of the party becomes the leader of the country.

In the USA the elect the president. The president does not have to be a member of the governing party, unlike Canada. We are stuck with the individual the party selects. Its an inside job.
I heard that the long distance charges between Dion's phone and a phone at the Moulin Rouge in Paris were horrendous in the last 48 hours.

As for Harper's phone ... a direct line to the White House was installed 11 months ago if you recall. And he is not even a Citizen of the USA. But he is hoping Bush will make him an honorary one.

;-)
On the money owl in both posts!!!
It's always funny when the left tries to compare Harper to Bush. It's not working, what's next?
Too right Ruez.
