Canfor, is laying off 300 sawmill workers for an indefinite period .  Most of the layoffs to take place  in Prince George.

The Rustad, Clear Lake, Polar and Mackenzie mills will all drop indefinitely to two shifts from three. starting on the last working day before the holiday break.

235 of the layoffs will be in Prince George, the remainder in Mackenzie.

New housing starts in the U.S. have been cut by more than a third in many U.S. markets because of troubles in the higher-risk subprime mortgage market, which has led to many foreclosures, lessened demand for housing and made it more difficult for many Americans trying to borrow for a house loan.

"The restructured shift schedule will not impact Canfor's ability to meet its customer and chip supply commitments," Canfor said in a release.

We all saw this coming!
Has anybody else noticed Canfor starts the same way as cancer?
And this is Canfors' fault how?
Never said it was canfor's fault. They are at the mercy of the MPB epidemic, ecomonic circumstances in Canada and the US. They are just doing what they have to do to protect their bottom line. Just seems that alot of people had their heads buried in the sand refusing to believe that this was going to happen.
Goodness me, Canfor is the problem again. Big surprise, don`t take into consideration the economy, the market, the dollar, stumpage, tariffs, labour costs, rising oil prices, rising steel costs or the millions of $`s the evil company injects into the local economy every month.
Good call buddy!
Run the company into the ground and sell all the assets to another big company, preferably one owned in another country!
Seriously, I feel bad for everyone who is losing a good paying job because of these shuts. I hope you all make the most of it.
I agree Imorg, alot of people just we`re paying attention.
Not much else to add here. I hope that the impacted people get through this and I also hope that people currently still employed in this sector take a hard look at what else WILL be coming and that they plan accordingly.
