Bell Believes Forestry Has Bottomed Out

Agriculture Minister Pat Bell says he feels there has been enough lumber taken off the market in recent weeks that the market will begin to re balance itself come spring.
Bell says that in the US housing starts were cut from 1.8 million to 1.3 million but he believes that come spring, the price of random length 2x4, s the bench mark in the industry should climb to around $300 dollars a 1000.
"I think that should happen by April or May of 2008" Bell said. "There were a lot of industry people wanting to be the last man standing and the result was that it took some time before serious cuts came in the forest industry. Other than waiting to see what West Fraser is going to do, I think that we have seen all the cuts made. "
Bell says B.C. held off the cuts for some time "We are the last of the industry to make the cuts, because we are the most efficient in Canada and we will be the first mills to pull out of the problem."
Bell is not so optimistic about exports "I would however be surprised if we don’t see a larger trade deficit than the -4% that we had in the second quarter, it will take that much time to catch up to us. "

Real facts are that the American mortgage crisis is not supposed to really hit until this spring when all those bad sub-prime mortgages start to become due for principle payments and the jacked up interest rates (Greenspans bankster legacy). That’s when foreclosures are supposed to create the buying opportunities. With existing buying opportunities I don't see that helping the lumber market for new homes at all. Any supply taken off the market by Canadian forest companies will easily be made up for by others. Look at any lumber yard around and ask yourself, 'why so much wood in the yard'? How will all that wood cause the price to go up? I agree when the inventory starts to move the forest companies will show a profit, but when will the inventory start to move (being the only real indicator that counts)?
A comparison of the production in the second quarter verse the exports of that production in the second quarter would be a stat that I think would be very interesting.
I think Pat comes up with his predictions to give himself an out from having to take any responsibility for creating alternative solutions beyond cheerleading for team liberal and the next election.
