Douglas Lake Ranch of Quesnel was the lowest bidder for two backhoes valued at about $250,000 dollars in a recent city bid. Their combined bid for the two machines totaled $4,248.23 per month compared to a bid from Inland Kenworth of Prince George who bid $4,316.32 per month
The lease for the two machines is for a period of five years. The lease (which also includes warranty on the machines) covers the basics but does not include the travel time at $97 dollars an hour from Quesnel, and 90 cents a kilometer to travel to this city to do any repairs.
A number of city workers complained last week that the contract which is $68.09 a molnth more for the Prince George machines, will, in all likelihood be eaten up with one warranty call a year.
They also suggested that having city workers sitting around waiting for the repairman to come from Quesnel just doesn’t make sense for that kind of money.
Both of the backhoes are four wheel drive and these same workers say if they don’t break down on occasion it will be a miracle.
There were four bidders for the machines, three from Prince George and The Douglas Lake Ranch from Quesnel.
