Evacuation Orders Remain In Effect for Many

Evacuation order remains in effect for people on P.G. Pulpmill Road   

The ice jam and flood situation along the Nechako River in Prince George is now into Week Two, as the Local State of Emergency that was declared at 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 11, remains in effect.  An Evacuation Alert remains in place over low-lying areas of Prince George on both sides of the Nechako River, extending from the confluence of the Fraser River and Nechako River several kilometers upstream on the Nechako. At its longest, the ice jam stretched for about six kilometers upstream on the Nechako. On Saturday night, the ice jam shifted and a large portion moved downstream into the Fraser.  However, there is still a two-kilometer stretch of ice in the Nechako that continues to cause high water levels in two areas.
Area A – River Road
  • 70% of gabion dikes currently constructed. Work is expected to be completed by the weekend.  Pumping of flood water will begin soon after to help dry the affected areas.
  • 4 homes and 9 people remain under Evacuation Orders in this area..
  • The area is currently under Evacuation Alert but emergency officials can serve Evacuation Orders anytime.
  • 32 city staff and contractors are currently working in this area.
Area B – Delhaven Condominiums & Ongman Road/McAloney Crescent
·         Evacuation Orders lifted at 5 p.m. Monday, December 17.
·         Area remains under Evacuation Alert.
·         Critical inspections of 9 residences and businesses were completed on December 17.  Assessment Reports will follow.  Further inspections will occur over the next few days.
·         Earth berm is 68% completed along the Nechako River between the Cameron Street and John Hart bridges.  Basal work is expected to be completed by the weekend.
Area C – Pulp Mill Road
  • Gabion dikes completed on the weekend.
  • 17 homes still under Evacuation Orders in this area.
  • Approximately 40 people affected by the Evacuation Orders.
  • Response work is now focused on pumping areas still affected
  • 40 city staff and contractors working in this area.
The Red Cross has opened a Recovery Centre to provide assistance to people affected by the flooding. Financial donations in support of the Prince George Winter Flood Response can be made by calling 1-800-418-1111 or at your local Red Cross office located at 1399 Sixth Avenue in Prince George. Donations should be earmarked "Western Canada Floods and Severe Weather Fund.”
