Prince George, B.C. - The cost of setting up gabion dikes, sandbagging, debris removal and overtime associated with the flooding caused by an ice jam on the Nechako River has now topped $1.5 million dollars
The bill is $1,554,813.60
Those funds are expected to be reimbursed by the Province under the disaster assistance fund.
Meantime, water levels on the river, remain stable in most areas with the exception of the Foothills Bridge. Crews have noticed a gradual rise in water levels there, and will be keeping a close eye on that site.
150 metres of gabion diking on River Road have now been reinforced and doubled in height either through addition of sandbags, or through the doubling the width of the gabion dikes and adding a second layer.
As for the ice jam itself, there has been no real change. It remains just under 6kms in length.
Debris removal will continue through the weekend as some businesses on River Road plan to be back to full shift on Monday. That will be their first full shifting since the river spilled its banks nearly four weeks ago.
