Prince George, B.C. - Charges have been laid against Marsulex Inc., a chemical plant in the BCR industrial site in Prince George in connection with an incident that happened  in the summer of 2006.

On Aug. 9, 2006, a large plume of sulphur dioxide gas was discharged from the Marsulex plant and settled in the neighbouring Canfor’s Rustad Brothers Sawmill yard.

The incident resulted in adverse health effects on 18 Rustad employees, 13 of whom required treatment at the Prince George Regional Hospital. Charges were recommended after an eight-month investigation and the execution of a search warrant by the CEIU.

Marsulex has been charged with several counts under the Environmental Management Act, including introducing waste and causing pollution, failing to comply with a permit, failing to maintain and inspect works, and failing to determine the daily quantity of sulphur dioxide discharged from their plant.

The first court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 5, 2008 in Prince George Provincial Court.

So what!...Pulp mills do it every other day!
Do they? Please share your info - when, what and how much?
After an 8 month investigation charges are finally laid. Now what? How long will this be dragged out? And what will the penalty be in the end? Besides charges, hopefully they also presented recommendations so it won't happen again. Otherwisek, the whole exercise will be a waste of time. Chester
Sulphur Dioxide is the product of burning Hydrogen Sulfide gas, which is a poisonous byproduct of oil refining. The flare stack at the Husky refinery, for instance, burns H2S and it is released as Sulphur Dioxide.
You would think after a $100,000,000 upgrade the Husky refinery could have done a better job on releasing this stuff!
