Prince George, B.C. -  School District 57's Superintendent says standardized test results over the past five years are showing "marked" improvements in several subject areas...

Brian Pepper says programs to increase levels of early literacy are beginning to bear fruit.  He says Grade 4 reading comprehension scores are up significantly -- a 20-point increase (from 61 to 81) among all students and a 23-point rise (48 to 71) among aboriginal students in three schools with a Primary Project in place.

"We have been collecting achievement results for several years now and have been using the data to adjust the teaching and learning for our students," says Pepper.  "And we have focused a major portion of our attention in helping to improve the academic achievement of our aboriginal students in general and our youngest learners in particular."

He says district officials and teachers are hopeful recent measures to improve reading and writing in Grades 4 through 7 will see students achieve above provincial averages.
