Well really people shouldn't stop for hitchhikers period. Let them stand there and keep driving. Problem solved unless of course they look to be in need of help and not just a ride. That's when i'd use cell phone and call in some help for the person. Too risky stopping as you never know what the person will do to you. I cringe everytime I drive by a hitchhiker and wonder if someone will show up dead somewhere.

I agree with Owl. These truckers need to be stopped, so us taxpayers can get on with our lives.

Ohhhh... I gotta jump into this... if the pipe was 4" diameter, the guy's hand would have to be a size 5XXXL... so the rest of him would be the size of a silverback.

If the pipe was 4" in length then the trucker is an bordering on lunacy for using such an inappropriate device... or maybe he needs to watch that old wrist-wrestling, Stallone movie.

The pipe is usually used for sliding over the end of a comealong or a sinch. It gives the driver more leaverage to tighten load chains or straps. Apparently he found another use for it.

Geez...Getajob needs to loosen up. No one is bashing truckers, just this one. Maybe the trucker had good reason to whack the hiker. Nobody knows yet. At least owl has something to say. If it wasn't for the owls of the world there wouldn't be a forum.

Who's bashing truckers, here? This could be the first good clue to the serial killer on the highway of tears. It's the first thing I thought of when I read the article. Who says the trucker didn't think it was a woman standing there hitchhiking .... did he happen to have long hair? Whoever the person was hitchhiking, he didn't deserve to get his head cracked open with a pipe, no matter what it's size. I don't find this a laughing matter and families who have lost loved ones along our highways aren't laughing either. Some sensitivity, please.

I can't say I have heard so many goofee responses regarding such a serious incident. I would like to know what caused the attack in the first place. It's not normal behavior to just stop on the highway and begin beating a lonely hitchhiker at 4:00am in the morning. Chester

I saw a big rig here in prince george that was empty and had blue tarps on its flatbed. Not sure about the rest of the details...there was no driver, it was parked along Highway 16 west, right on the side, by Superstore....

I myself thought highway of tears... then I tried to rationalize. Try as I might, I could not come up with a reaonable scenario for a trucker to pull over at 4am and beat up a hitch hiker. Let's just say this hitch hiker proved to be violent and the trucker was defending himself... did the trucker notify authorities about a deranged hitchiker on the road? Apparently not. One would think that the trucker would at the very least want to warn other truckers on the highway about this individual - I thought they all looked out for each other - and they have radios to communicate... why not use it? It makes me suspicious - it just doesn't add up and I fear that there may be much more to it.

I can't believe the bickering about the supposed weapon - what does it matter?

Women disappearing from all sorts of different locations, many, many kilometers apart on a very long stretch of highway... the possibility of it being a truker is not surprising - would be a logical suspicion. Does one rule out the possibility just because a trucker is a trucker? I don't really understand that comment at all. Actually there have been many cases in North America of truckers utilizing there means to employment to commit crimes and quickly move to a different area.
