Prince George, B.C. - Although RCMP in Prince George are not able to confirm recent violence in the City is linked or gang related, the extent of media coverage on the shootings could lead some to believe there is an increase in gang activity. “The warfare itself is not actually increasing,” says Sgt Shinder Kirk of the BC Integrated Gang Task Force. “What we’re seeing is a state of overt violence between gangs. This is due to the accessibility of guns in our province and the very active and lucrative drug trade.” There are 129 known and active gangs in B.C. . It may seem like a large number, Kirk says it’s because the police forces have become more efficient at identifying these groups as gangs. There are three levels of gangs that can be identified: Top level, organized crime such as the Mafia, Asian and motorcycle gangs. Mid Level, not quite organized crime, but above the level of “street gangs” Low Level : Street level groups. These groups may or may not have a name, it is their activities that validate their “gang” status with police. Sgt Shinder Kirk says in order to curb the violence there is active enforcement to combat the problem at street level. There are also projects that are looking at dismantling the groups. The final measure taken is to educate youth as the RCMP hope to dispel the myth about the glamour of gang life. In May, Sgt, Kirk and a group of gang experts from the BC Integrated Gang Task Force will come to Prince George to work with local police on the identification of gangs. He also plans to speak to local media to describe what is going on to ensure everyone is speaking the same language so there is no miscommunication when reporting on gang violence.
