Fort St. John, B.C. - The budget for Fort St. John has received first and second reading, with third reading expected next Monday night.
The City of Ft St John is now proposing to raise residential taxes by 18%, the Commercial rate has been dropped from 42% to 20%.
That means a business assessed at $920,000 will see nearly $1600 added to their tax bill and an owner of a home assessed at $280 thousand will pay about $120 dollars more this year.
The budget approval follows a trimming of $1.7 million dollars, but still comes in at $83.6 million dollars. That total includes $34 million for operations, and $49.6 million for capital projects.

There are many businesses operating in the FSJ area that pay next to nothing for taxes as it is. They are companies operated by BC residents that have an Alberta business address that is an empty office with a phone and fax machine. The cost of that office is more than offset by the tax savings these BC residents enjoy by not paying the taxes that they should be.
