Potential for Free Parking for Veterans

Prince George is looking at the possibility of providing free parking for all vehicles brandishing a veteran’s plate.

A letter from the head of the B.C.-Yukon Command of the royal Canadian Legion, notes the province marked the 60th anniversary of D-Day with the introduction of the specialized plate. Now, local communities can make their own statement by offering free parking to all who have such a plate.

The City is looking into the idea, but first it wants to know just how many vehicles it may be talking about. That might be difficult to ascertain, for although one must have served in a conflict or in a capacity with the Canadian Forces to qualify for a veteran’s plate, it is possible one “vet” may have such plates on any number of personally owned vehicles, but wouldn’t be driving all at the same time.

The free parking recognition is already offered in Richmond, New Westminster, Tail, Vernon, Coquitlam, Penticton and Whiterock

I have the greatest respect for veterans, but what about our seniors? They should be eligable as well.
What difference does it make how many vehicles may be involved? We should be offering free parking on the principle, not on the basis of "how much will it cost?" If the City is worried about loss of Revenue I wonder how our men felt going off to war worried about loss of life? I hardly think it would amount to a worrisome amount of money anways. I know it is ALWAYS about money these days, but once in awhile, lets spend some on something worthwhile and deserving. A vet plate is not easily forged, so, unlike handicap signs we would not be dealing with large numbers of abusive users.
This is a non issue. If the vehicle has a veterans plate, dont give it a ticket . End of story.
