Prince George, B.C. – The 2009 World Baseball Challenge set to take place in Prince George from July 18-25, 2009 continues to add international talent to the six team roster.
Confirmed teams are Team Canada, Team USA (Reno Astros), and the host Prince George Axemen, (local players and key additions).
WBC founder Larry Seminoff, has received confirmation from Chinese Taipei (Taiwan), which will be made official after the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing.
Jim Swanson, the 2009 WBC Chairman, will be travelling to Cuba in mid-June to meet with Mr. Higinio Perez, the President of the Cuban Baseball Federation, and conclude the agreement to have Cuba participate in the challenge. This will also provide a meeting with representatives of the Venezuela Baseball Association and Puerto Rico regarding the potential of their participation.
The WBC has been in contact with Japan, however, as they are training for the Olympics, those discussions will continue after September.
The WBC is very pleased with the progress of the event. “This is a very exciting announcement to make, and one that really lets us move ahead with plans to unveil ticket packages one year ahead of the event,” said WBC committee member Chad Craig, the tournament marketing director.
With these logistics in place, the remaining 14 months allows the WBC to focus on taking care of details and executing the tournament plan.
