Prince George, B.C. – The battle to keep the Hockey Night in Canada theme has hit the political arena.

At issue, the CBC’s desire not to renew the license agreement with the composer of the song which has been dubbed Canada’s “other” national anthem. Each time the CBC plays the familiar tune before Hockey Night in Canada, the composer, Dolores Claman gets $500. The current license agreement has run out, and the CBC says it wants to go down another road.

The outcry has been louder than fans in a playoff game screaming for a penalty to the opposition!

Earlier today,  B.C. New Democrat, Mike Farnworth issued a release calling on the CBC to keep the familiar tune“ “For many of us, when we hear that first ‘Dunt-da DUNT-da Dunt’, we’re reminded of a childhood growing up on hockey.  One of the CBC’s responsibilities is the protection and promotion of Canadian culture.  I cannot think of a more fitting representation of our country’s culture.  The CBC must ensure it continues to be heard across the country now and for future generations,” Farnworth said.

Not to be outdone, the National Liberals are putting pressure on the Harper Government’s Minister of Heritage, Josée Verner. The Minister “ must stand up for one of Canada’s most famous musical traditions and do what she can to ensure the CBC keeps the Hockey Night in Canada musical theme, Liberal Heritage Critic Denis Coderre said today.

“The Hockey Night in Canada theme is a part of Canada’s culture that goes beyond sport,” said M. Coderre. “This is a great opportunity for the Heritage Minister to finally get off the bench by defending an important Canadian tradition.”

The CBC has delivered a proposal for a new license of the theme.  Those who negotiate the license say they can only assume the reversal in the CBC’s thinking is “due  to the remarkable public response.”

Dolores Claman, has been deeply touched by the strong show of support she's received from fans around the world. "I wrote this song with a picture of warriors in my head…hockey warriors. Now it would seem the hockey fans are the true warriors. Thank you so much for all of your kind words and anecdotes about how much the song means to you."

We are waiting to hear if the new proposal will be accepted.

only the CBC would consider this moronic move.
Yeah, but how much is she asking for this new contract? $500 still? $1000? Maybe she wants more money each time its played, and it iwll cost to much?
Silent hockey games would be a different way to view them wouldn't it...L

It's just a theme song. Everything changes over time, why should this be any different? I think this is sad that as Canadians this is such a big deal to us. Surely there are more important things going on in the world than a theme song?!?
Get yer head outa yer ARSE KITKAT.
yes there may be more important things in the world going on, however!! this song has been the song that calls the fans together!! this song can be heard loud and clear during the hockey season, and there is never any question as to what is going to be happening soon there after!!

if we all just took the attitude that this is just a song and change is inevitable, then let the flood gates open to allow anything and everything to change and all we should do is let it happen!!

hmmmmmm not this Canadian and not this theme song.
It's all just negotiations. All the outcry just means the CBC, and by extension all of us taxpayers will be paying MORE for the rights to quell the uprising.

Nice work!
It's amazing that a piece of performance art would be so important to the average Canadian. Or is it?
A bunch of millionaires chase a little piece of rubber around on skates definitely qualify as national 'heroes'. What a joke.
I like watching hockey too, but is this really that important?
My heads up my arse wrinkledog? That is pretty much the response I expected, don't bother to argue your point with any intelligence like Anastasia did.
For me, trying to change the Hockey Night in Canada Theme song is like suggesting we change the Lords Prayer. Not something I would support.

The orginal author of the song, Delores Clayman should be compensated fairly and adequately each time the song is played. Why not? She deserves it as much as everyone else for the rights to use a name or song. It is a Canadian Tradition and I would like to see it continue. Chester
