Prince George, B.C. - Even with current temperatures below seasonal averages, the Prince George Fire Centre remains susceptible to fire activity, especially in the north eastern corner of the province.
At this time last year the daily temperature reached 18 C in Prince George and the fire centre had experienced 61 fires to date. In contrast, today a high of 13 C is forecasted for Prince George and the fire centre has responded to 93 fires to date. Although temperatures are cool, the ground is still dry and minimal heat is needed to quickly increase the risk of wildfire.
The Prince George Fire Centre reminds the public to use caution when building campfires, keep water and hand tools nearby to prevent the fire from escaping, and make sure it is completely out before leaving. All human-caused fires are preventable and divert resources from naturally-occurring lightning-caused fires.
The B.C. Forest Service has responded to 22 fires in the north eastern corner of the province in the last week. Many of these fires were lightning caused and all are now out or fully controlled. The fire danger rating is currently very low in the southern areas of the Prince George Fire Centre, to high in areas west of Fort St. John. The rating for the rest of the fire centre remains low to moderate.
